There is no route to describe, no freeway to plan around and no traffic hour that changes the answer, and that single fact reshapes what learning to fly costs you in time.

Between them, 91345 and 91343 hold roughly 79,497 people, most of whom have heard the pattern overhead every day of their lives without ever standing on the ramp underneath it. This page is about closing that gap.

Three To Five Miles — The Shortest Drive On This Site

From North Hills (91343) the airport is essentially next door. Balboa Blvd runs south straight to our door; from the Nordhoff Street or Roscoe Boulevard end you are looking at three miles and about six minutes, most of it spent at four traffic lights. Woodley Ave is the parallel road one street east if Balboa is busy, and it drops you at Roscoe within a block of the same turn.

From Mission Hills (91345) add two miles. Come south on Sepulveda Blvd from San Fernando Mission Blvd, past Devonshire and Nordhoff, then west on Roscoe Blvd to Balboa and south. The 405 is the alternative — on at Devonshire, off at Roscoe — and it is genuinely faster only outside peak; at five in the afternoon Sepulveda beats it, because you are travelling three exits and the ramps cost more than the miles save. Either way it is under ten minutes.

What Six Minutes Actually Changes

Most people think of flight training as a fixed price — 40 hours under Part 61, $10,400 for Private Pilot Standard. What they underestimate is the second currency, which is time spent not flying. For someone driving in from the Conejo Valley, a one-hour lesson is a two-and-a-half-hour commitment. From North Hills it is a seventy-five-minute one. Ground instruction at $110 an hour and the full-motion simulator at $189 for 60 minutes are easy to slot into an evening when the drive is negligible. And the Teens Pilot Course for ages 10–15 at $4,200 is genuinely feasible as an after-school activity from these neighbourhoods, which it is not from most of the Valley. The Mission From The Air, And The Rest Of The First Ten Minutes

These communities are so close to the field that you are over them before the climb has finished, which makes the first few minutes unusually dense. The San Fernando Mission is the landmark, and it is one of the genuinely distinctive things to see from a light aircraft anywhere in the Valley. From the ground you get a white wall and a gate on Sepulveda. From 1,500 feet the whole complex resolves: the long low arcaded convento building running its row of arches at a deliberate angle to the street grid, the church alongside it, the bell wall, the enclosed courtyard and garden, and the cemetery beside it — an eighteenth-century footprint sitting inside a twentieth-century subdivision, and obviously older than everything around it in a way no photograph from the parking lot conveys.

North of it, the Santa Susana Mountains close the top of the Valley, with the 405 and the 5 climbing toward the Newhall Pass and the 118 ruling its hard east–west line below. Underneath you the grid is legible street by street: Devonshire and Nordhoff running east–west, Sepulveda Blvd and the 405 corridor cutting north–south through both communities, Woodley and Balboa either side. Turn south and within ninety seconds the grid simply stops at the Sepulveda Basin — Lake Balboa, the golf courses, the wildlife reserve and the concrete channel of the Los Angeles River, a deliberate hole left in an otherwise total city, with Woodley Ave running down the middle of it. Beyond that the Santa Monica Mountains close the far end. Most students find their own roof inside the first two minutes, because the runway they just left is still in the window.

Two ZIP Codes, One Obvious Airport

Everywhere else on this site we spend a section weighing fields. Here there is nothing to weigh. Whiteman in Pacoima is a smaller field with far less training capacity, and it is the subject of an active Los Angeles County study of its own future. Hollywood Burbank is a commercial airline airport in Class C airspace where you are sequenced behind jets, which is not a good use of a student's money. Camarillo is thirty-plus miles west over the Conejo Grade. Van Nuys is three.

And it happens to be the right field on the merits too. Van Nuys is Class D, tower-controlled, with parallel runways — 16R/34L is 8,001 feet — at 802 feet elevation beneath the shelves of the Los Angeles Class B, and it carries the deepest maintenance, avionics and fuel infrastructure of any general aviation airport in the region.
