How Much A Discovery Flight Costs
A discovery flight costs $229 at You Fly LA — 60 minutes, one person, out of Van Nuys Airport. There is no tax and no booking fee, so $229 is the total you pay. Longer and two-seat options run from $189 for a simulator session to $699 for two hours in a Cirrus SR22. Every price we charge is published below.
If you have been shopping around Los Angeles, you have probably already hit a "call for pricing" page or two. We do not do that. Below is the complete list, what each number includes, what makes one tier more expensive than another, and how a discovery flight compares to the cost of the full Private Pilot course it leads into.
Every Discovery Flight Price
| Experience | 60 Min | 90 Min | 120 Min |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discovery Flight, Los Angeles — one person | $229 | $299 | $399 |
| Discovery Flight For Two — Downtown LA | $299 | $399 | $499 |
| Discovery Flight For Two — Malibu Coast | $299 | $399 | $499 |
| Luxury Cirrus SR22 For Two | $399 | $549 | $699 |
| Full-Motion Simulator | $189 | — | — |
| In-Person Consultation (no flight) | $0 | — | — |
That is the whole menu. Ten entries, six prices, and nothing hidden behind a form. The 60-minute discovery flight at $229 is the one most people book, and the full discovery flight collection shows every duration side by side.
Why There Is No Tax And No Booking Fee
Flight instruction is a service, not a shipped good. Our discovery flight products are not taxable and we do not add a booking, processing or fuel surcharge at checkout. If the page says $229, your card is charged $229. If it says $499, you pay $499.
This is worth saying out loud because most things you book online arrive at the final screen carrying something extra — a service charge, a processing fee, tax. Here the advertised number is the final number. It also means you can compare us to anyone else honestly, as long as you compare their total rather than their headline.
What Drives The Price Differences
Three things move the number, and only three.
Duration. This is the biggest lever. Sixty minutes at $229 gets you out of the Van Nuys pattern, over the Valley or the hills, and back with a solid stretch of you flying. Ninety minutes at $299 buys a genuine route — the city or the coast — rather than a loop. Two hours at $399 lets you do both in one flight, and gives you enough time on the controls that the learning genuinely compounds. Per minute, the longer flights are cheaper: $3.82 a minute at 60 minutes, $3.32 at 90, $3.33 at 120.
The second seat. Bringing someone adds $70 across the board — $299 instead of $229 for 60 minutes, $399 instead of $299 for 90, $499 instead of $399 for 120. That covers the extra weight, the extra headset, and the fact that the aircraft is being flown as a three-person flight rather than a two-person one. One of you flies from the left seat; the other rides in the back with a headset and a view.
The aircraft. A Piper Warrior, Diamond DA20 or Cessna 162 is a training aircraft: honest, simple and exactly what you want for a first lesson. A Cirrus SR22 is a different machine — glass cockpit, side-yoke, leather, a whole-airframe parachute, and considerably more performance. That is why the Luxury Cirrus flight for two is $399 for 60 minutes rather than $299, rising to $699 for two hours. Our published hourly rates show the same gap: aircraft from $179, Diamond DA20 $229, Cirrus $479, instructor $110 an hour.
What You Get For Each Tier
| Tier | Price | What You Get |
|---|---|---|
| Full-Motion Simulator, 60 min | $189 | Redbird full-motion simulator, instructor throughout, no weather limits, loggable ground and simulator time. The lowest-cost way to try flying in Los Angeles. |
| Discovery Flight, 60 min | $229 | Preflight brief, walk-around, you flying from the left seat, instructor in the right, debrief and a signed logbook entry. Valley and foothills routing. |
| Discovery Flight, 90 min | $299 | Everything above plus a real route — downtown LA and the Hollywood Sign, or west over the Santa Monica Mountains to the coast. |
| For Two, 60 min | $299 | Same 60-minute flight with a second passenger in the back. Downtown LA or Malibu Coast routing, one of you flying. |
| Discovery Flight, 120 min | $399 | City and coast in one flight, with enough time on the controls to fly a full circuit of manoeuvres, not just a sample. |
| For Two, 90 min | $399 | Ninety minutes over downtown or Malibu with a passenger along for all of it. |
| Luxury Cirrus SR22, 60 min | $399 | Cirrus SR22 with glass cockpit and side-yoke, for two, from Van Nuys. The premium option for a gift or an occasion. |
| For Two, 120 min | $499 | Two hours, two people, the full downtown-and-coast route with time to spare. |
| Luxury Cirrus SR22, 90 min | $549 | Ninety minutes in the SR22 for two, city or coast. |
| Luxury Cirrus SR22, 120 min | $699 | Two hours in the SR22 for two — the longest and most comfortable flight we sell. |
What Is Included In Every Price
Regardless of tier, the price covers the whole experience end to end:
The preflight brief — fifteen to twenty minutes with your instructor on the controls, the aircraft and the route before you walk out. The walk-around — you inspect fuel, oil, control surfaces and tyres yourself, the way a pilot does before every flight. The flight time — aircraft, fuel and instructor, all in. Hands on the controls — you fly in cruise, with the instructor handling takeoff and landing. The debrief. The logbook entry, signed by your instructor, recording the aircraft and the dual instruction received.
Nothing on that list is an add-on and there is no fuel surcharge. The only thing you bring is a government-issued photo ID. You do not need an FAA medical certificate, a student pilot certificate or any prior experience — see what a discovery flight is and what to expect on the day for the full picture.
Discovery Flight Cost Vs The Full Private Pilot Course
The useful way to frame $229 is as a fraction of the thing it leads to. A discovery flight is roughly 2% of the cost of the standard Private Pilot programme — and because the flight is logged as dual instruction, it is not a separate purchase at all. It is the first hour of the course, sold on its own.
| Programme | Price | A $229 Discovery Flight Is |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery Flight, 60 min | $229 | The starting point |
| Sport Pilot (20-hour FAA minimum) | $8,400 | About 2.7% of the course |
| Private Pilot — Standard, 40 hr | $10,400 | About 2.2% of the course |
| Private Pilot — Comprehensive, 60 hr | $15,400 | About 1.5% of the course |
| Instrument Rating | $11,700 | About 2.0% of the rating |
| Airline Pilot Career, 260 hr | $84,000 | About 0.3% of the programme |
Put another way: $229 is what it costs to find out whether you want to spend $10,400. That is the cheapest due diligence in aviation. If the answer turns out to be yes, our Private Pilot licence cost page and our flight school cost in Los Angeles breakdown show exactly where every dollar of the larger number goes, and flight training financing covers the payment options.
Cheaper And More Expensive Ways To Start
If $229 is more than you want to spend on a first look, the full-motion Redbird simulator is $189 for 60 minutes and is not affected by weather — useful during the May and June marine layer, when coastal mornings can stay socked in until midday. And a free in-person consultation costs $0: come to Van Nuys Airport, look at the aircraft, talk to an instructor and leave without buying anything.
At the other end, the Luxury Cirrus SR22 for two at $399 to $699 is the one people choose for a birthday, an anniversary or a proposal. If you are buying for someone else, a You Fly LA gift card lets them pick their own date and duration.
