From Studio City a discovery flight is eleven miles and about twenty minutes on the 101, and it puts the Hollywood Sign under your wing inside the first ten minutes of flying. The flight is $229 for 60 minutes, you do the flying, and a certificated flight instructor sits beside you teaching. We are at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Van Nuys, CA 91406.
The Hollywood Sign Is Six Minutes From Wheels-Up
Studio City sits at the foot of the Cahuenga Pass, which means the landmarks everyone else flies out to see are your local geography. From Van Nuys the eastbound route follows the north face of the Santa Monica Mountains, and by the time the aeroplane is settled in the climb you are already looking at ground you drive past.
The order of arrival is consistent. Universal City comes first, the backlot streets and the sound stages laid out in a way that only makes sense from above. Then the ridge, with Lake Hollywood — the Hollywood Reservoir — sitting in its bowl on the far side, invisible from Ventura Blvd and completely obvious from 2,000 feet. The Hollywood Sign on Mount Lee is next, seen from the north, which is the angle almost nobody has. Griffith Observatory follows on the south slope of Mount Hollywood with the whole of the Los Angeles basin behind it, and further east the downtown skyline stands on the flat.
What You Will Recognise Over Studio City
Closer to home, the things you will pick out first are the ones you cannot see properly from the ground. CBS Studio Center on Radford reads as a block of stages with a car park around it. The Los Angeles River runs along the south edge of the neighbourhood in its concrete channel and is easier to follow from the air than from any street. Fryman Canyon and the Wilacre Park trails show as a green wedge climbing toward Mulholland, and the houses on the canyon roads above Ventura Blvd step up the hillside in a pattern that is invisible when you are on one of them.
West of that the Sepulveda Basin appears about two minutes before you land, and Studio City residents regularly spend that time working out that the Valley is a bowl, which is not something Ventura Blvd ever tells you.
Getting To 7900 Balboa Blvd From Studio City
The default is the 101 westbound to the Balboa Blvd exit, then north on Balboa for just under four miles. From Laurel Canyon and Ventura that is about eleven miles and twenty minutes off-peak. The 101 west through Sherman Oaks is the weak link between four and seven on weekdays, when it can add fifteen minutes to a trip of this length.
The surface alternative is Ventura Blvd west to Van Nuys Blvd, north to Victory Blvd, then west to Balboa. It is not faster off-peak, but it is far more predictable at 5:30, and it avoids the 101/405 interchange entirely. A Sunday morning booking removes the question altogether: the same eleven miles runs in seventeen or eighteen minutes.
| Starting Point | Route | Typical Drive |
|---|---|---|
| Ventura Blvd & Laurel Canyon (91604) | 101 west, Balboa Blvd exit, north | 20–26 min |
| Colfax Ave & Moorpark St | Moorpark to Van Nuys Blvd, Victory west | 22–28 min |
| Mulholland Dr above Studio City | Down Laurel Canyon to the 101 west | 26–34 min |
You Fly It. The Instructor Teaches.
A discovery flight is not a ride and it is not a tour with a pilot narrating. You are in the left seat with your hands on the yoke and your feet on the rudder pedals. Your instructor handles the takeoff and the landing — the two parts that take practice — and stays on the controls all the way through, but the flying in between belongs to you.
The hour in the air is bracketed by the rest of a lesson. First a briefing at a table: where you are going, what the aeroplane does, what the controls do. Then the preflight inspection, done together, walking round the aeroplane checking fuel, oil, tyres, control surfaces. Afterwards, a debrief. Two hours at the airport for a 60-minute flight is the realistic figure. If you want a fuller account before booking, read our explainer on discovery flights. The field you will be doing it at is covered on the Van Nuys Airport page: Class D, tower-controlled, with parallel runways and the Los Angeles Class B shelves overhead.
Logging The Hour
The time counts. It is recorded as dual instruction received, in a logbook issued to you, and it goes toward the 40-hour Part 61 minimum for a private pilot certificate. People who came for a one-off experience frequently discover that the certificate is closer than they assumed, and the sibling page on flight training for Studio City residents sets out what the rest of that path costs and how long it takes.
Requirements are short: photo ID, a parent or guardian signature if you are under 18, and weight within the aircraft limits — 180 lb per person and 360 lb combined in the Piper Warrior, 200 lb and 400 lb in the Cirrus SR22. No medical certificate is needed for this flight because the instructor is pilot in command, and no experience is assumed at all.
What A Studio City Discovery Flight Costs
| Flight | Aircraft | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery Flight, 60 min | Piper Warrior PA-28-161 | $229 |
| Discovery Flight, 90 min | Piper Warrior PA-28-161 | $299 |
| Discovery Flight, 120 min | Piper Warrior PA-28-161 | $399 |
| For Two — Downtown Los Angeles, 60 min | Piper Warrior PA-28-161 | $299 |
| Luxury Cirrus SR22 For Two, 60 min | Cirrus SR22 | $399 |
| Full-Motion Simulator, 60 min | Redbird simulator | $189 |
Those prices carry no tax and no booking fee — $229 is the total, and nothing is added between the button and your card. Because Studio City sits at the eastern end of the Valley, the two-person Downtown Los Angeles route at $299 for 60 minutes is the natural choice if two of you want to go; it flies the ground this page has been describing. More on how the figures are built up at how discovery flight pricing works.
Weather And Rescheduling
The marine layer that arrives in May and June comes over the Santa Monica Mountains overnight, and Studio City often sits right under the edge of it. If the cloud is low over the pass in the morning, the Valley side is frequently worse, not better. Later in the summer the problem is heat rather than cloud: high density altitude makes the aeroplane climb less eagerly and the air over the ridge choppier by mid-afternoon.
You are not charged if the weather cancels your flight, and rescheduling is free for any reason up to 24 hours before the slot. The detail is on the page covering weather, cancellations and rescheduling. A morning around ten, or an evening after six, gives you the best combination of clear air and a clear 101.
