The nearest flight school to North Hollywood is You Fly LA at Van Nuys Airport — 11.7 miles west, about 19 minutes across the floor of the Valley. We fly from 7900 Balboa Blvd, Van Nuys, CA 91406. North Hollywood has no airfield of its own, and the airport you can see from the top of Lankershim is a commercial one that does not train primary students, which is the whole argument on this page.

Four Ways West, And The Freeway Is Not One Of The Good Ones

North Hollywood sits at the east end of the Valley grid and we sit near the west end of it, so almost every sensible route is a straight arterial run — and the arterials beat the freeway most of the day.

Vanowen St is the quiet one. From Lankershim Blvd it runs due west through Van Nuys and past the south side of the airport, and it carries far less traffic than Victory a half-mile south. Turn north on Balboa Blvd for the last stretch. Victory Blvd is the same idea with more signals and more left-turn queues; it is the better choice if you are starting near Whitsett Ave, because Victory is the street Whitsett hands you. Roscoe Blvd is the answer from the 91605 end — it runs west from Lankershim to the airport's northern boundary, and you drop south on Balboa for the last half-mile.

The freeway version — the 170 south to the 101 north-west, then the 405 north and off at Roscoe Blvd — is genuinely quick on a Sunday morning. At 5:30 pm on a Tuesday it strings the two worst pieces of road in the Valley together back to back. Learn the surface route first and keep the freeway for weekends.

The One Neighbourhood That Can Reach Us Without A Car

North Hollywood is the eastern terminus of the Metro B Line and the eastern end of the G Line busway, and that combination is unique among the communities we serve. Nobody in Encino or Calabasas can get to a flight lesson on transit. A student living within walking distance of North Hollywood Station can.

The G Line runs west along the old railway right-of-way that cuts diagonally across the Valley grid, and one of its stops is on Balboa Blvd — our street, south of the airport. For a seventeen-year-old saving for a certificate, that is not a novelty; it is the difference between two lessons a week and one. Training rewards frequency far more than it rewards talent, and the students who finish quickest are the ones for whom getting to the field is boring.

Burbank Airport Is Closer. Here Is Why That Does Not Help.

This is the honest bit, and North Hollywood is the community where it matters most, because Hollywood Burbank Airport is plainly the nearer field. It is also not a flight school.

Hollywood Burbank is a commercial airline airport in Class C airspace. It exists to move scheduled passenger jets, and primary flight training there is negligible — no fleet of trainers, no bank of instructors, no realistic prospect of unrestricted pattern work between airline arrivals. Van Nuys is Class D: tower-controlled, extremely busy with general aviation, with parallel runways of which 16R/34L is 8,001 feet, sitting beneath the shelves of the Los Angeles Class B. It has the trainers, the instructors and the maintenance capacity that make a two-lessons-a-week schedule possible. And you do not lose Burbank by training at Van Nuys — you gain it as a destination. It is roughly eight nautical miles east of our field, which makes it one of the best short lessons available to a Van Nuys student: call approach, take a squawk code, get sequenced with the jets, land at a Class C airport, and come home. Most North Hollywood students land at the airport they grew up next to well before their checkride.

What NoHo Looks Like Eight Minutes After Takeoff

Turn south-east out of Van Nuys and the eastern Valley arrives quickly, and North Hollywood has one feature from the air that no other neighbourhood here has: it is crooked.

The entire San Fernando Valley is a north–south grid except for the corner you live in. Lankershim Blvd and the streets beside it run on a diagonal, because they follow the line of the old railway, and from two thousand feet that diagonal is the most obvious thing below you — a long angled cut with the busway and the bike path running along it, aimed straight back at the airport you just left. You will spend a minute working out why your own street is at forty-five degrees to everyone else's.

South of that, the NoHo Arts District reads as a tight block of low buildings and theatres around Lankershim and Magnolia, with the 170 slicing through it as a clean grey line. Follow it and the ground rises: the Hollywood Hills stand up as a wall along the southern edge, and at their eastern end the Universal lot sits at the mouth of the Cahuenga Pass, its backlot streets obviously only fronts once you are above them.

Three ZIP Codes, 130,419 Neighbours

North Hollywood is one of the largest communities in the San Fernando Valley — roughly 130,419 residents across three ZIP codes — and they do not all book the same thing.

91601 is the south end: the Arts District, Chandler, the corridor around Lankershim, a younger and more transient population, and the source of most of our teen and early-twenties enquiries. The Teens Pilot Course at $4,200 is built for ages 10–15, and a fourteen-year-old can legally log every hour of it. 91606, east toward Whitsett and Vineland, is the settled residential middle — families and second careers. 91605, north of Vanowen toward Roscoe, is the closest of the three to our door, and the one where the shortest drive most often becomes the fastest certificate.

Where budget decides rather than time, two answers are worth knowing. The Sport Pilot certificate is $8,400 against an FAA minimum of 20 hours — a real certificate with real limits. Private Pilot — Standard is $10,400 against the 40-hour Part 61 minimum. Flight training financing covers paying for either, and a free in-person consultation costs nothing.
