What makes it manageable is what is not in it. There is no mountain pass, no grade and no second freeway — the whole run is flat valley floor at a steady elevation, so it behaves predictably. Off-peak it is a true 27 minutes. Eastbound between about seven and nine on a weekday morning it stretches to 40–55, and the westbound return between four and seven is the slower direction, which is why afternoon and evening lesson slots from Agoura Hills are worth booking at 6 PM rather than 4:30. Ladyface, And Agoura Hills From Two Thousand Feet
Agoura Hills is a strip of town laid along the only flat corridor between two mountain ranges, and from the air that is instantly obvious in a way it never is from the 101. Departing Van Nuys and tracking west, you cross the Valley floor and Warner Center, and then the ground closes in from both sides — the Simi Hills and Chesebro Canyon to the north, the Santa Monica Mountains rising immediately to the south.
Ladyface Mountain is the reference point. It stands on its own at the west end of town where Kanan Road meets the freeway, a steep isolated cone with the 101 curving around its foot, and it is the single most recognisable natural landmark between the Valley and the Conejo Grade. Pilots use it the way they use a water tower. From above you can see the whole ridge trail up it, and how narrow the gap really is that the freeway squeezes through.
South of the town the country opens into the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Paramount Ranch reads as pale grassland and oak scattered along the valley floor off Cornell Road, with the burn scar of the 2018 Woolsey Fire still legible across the hills around it and the regrowth coming back in patches. East of that, Malibu Creek State Park spreads either side of the gorge, with the reservoir at Malibou Lake and the volcanic outcrops above it. Then the ridge tops out — and drops. Follow Kanan Road south through the tunnels in your head and the aircraft does it in about three minutes: chaparral, then the last ridge, then nothing but the Pacific with Point Dume standing out into it.
