The Diamond DA20-C1 is a two-seat, single-engine composite trainer that has become one of the most recognisable aircraft on flight school ramps in North America. Under its bubble canopy, with a control stick instead of a yoke and a fuel burn a Cessna owner would envy, it flies more like a glider than a traditional trainer. What The DA20-C1 Is
The DA20 began life in the early 1990s as the Diamond (then Hoffmann/Diamond) Katana, a two-seat light aircraft derived directly from Diamond's motorglider heritage. The original DA20-A1 Katana used a Rotax 912 engine. In 1998 Diamond introduced the DA20-C1, which replaced the Rotax with an American-built Continental engine, revised the wing, and was aimed squarely at the North American training market. It has been marketed as the Eclipse and, in the equipped training configuration, the Evolution.

Airframe, Engine And Design Features
The DA20-C1 is built almost entirely from glass-reinforced composite rather than riveted aluminium. That gives it a smooth, seamless exterior with no rivet lines, excellent aerodynamic efficiency, and no corrosion in the traditional sense — though composite structures bring their own care requirements, particularly around heat and paint colour, which is why DA20s are almost always painted white.
The powerplant is a Continental IO-240-B, a four-cylinder, horizontally opposed, fuel-injected engine of 240 cubic inches producing 125 horsepower. Being fuel-injected rather than carburetted, it has no carburettor heat control and no carburettor icing risk, but it does bring hot-start technique into the syllabus. It drives a fixed-pitch propeller, so power is set with the throttle alone.
Three features define the flying experience:
- The bubble canopy. A single large forward-hinged canopy over both seats gives all-round visibility that no strut-braced high-wing trainer can approach. It is genuinely useful for traffic scanning and it makes the aircraft feel light and open. It also makes the cockpit warm on a sunny day.
- The control stick. The DA20 uses a centre-mounted stick rather than a control yoke. Pilots coming from Cessnas or Pipers adapt quickly, and most report the stick makes the aircraft feel more direct and more precise.
- The long, high-aspect-ratio wing. Inherited from Diamond's motorglider designs, it gives a very flat glide, excellent climb for the power available, and superb efficiency — but it also means the aircraft floats readily in ground effect if you arrive fast.
The landing gear is fixed tricycle with a castering nosewheel. That last detail matters on the ground: directional control at low taxi speed is by differential braking rather than by steering through the rudder pedals, which is a genuine skill to learn and one that transfers well to more complex aircraft later.

The useful load is the DA20's main practical limitation. With around 580 to 600 pounds available and full fuel at roughly 144 pounds, two average adults and a small bag is a realistic load, and two large adults with full tanks may not be. Weight and balance on a DA20 is not a formality — it is a calculation you actually have to do.

Those cruise and fuel burn numbers together are the reason the DA20 is so popular with flight schools: roughly 138 knots on about five and a half gallons an hour is a combination no 1970s trainer of similar capability comes close to. It is a materially cheaper aircraft to operate per hour than a four-seat piston trainer, and for the roughly ninety percent of primary training that never carries more than two people, the two extra seats were never being used anyway.

What The POH Contains
The DA20-C1 Airplane Flight Manual and Pilot's Operating Handbook follows the same standardised structure used across modern general aviation:
- General. Three-view drawings, dimensions, engine and propeller data, fuel and oil specification, and the abbreviations used throughout.
- Limitations. The certificated envelope: airspeed limits and instrument markings, powerplant limits, weight and CG limits, approved manoeuvres, load factors, and required placards. This section is legally binding.
- Emergency Procedures. Engine failure in every phase of flight, fire, electrical failure, canopy problems, spin recovery and forced landings. Bold items are memory items.
- Normal Procedures. Preflight walkaround, starting, taxi, run-up, takeoff, climb, cruise, descent, landing and shutdown.
- Performance. Takeoff and landing charts, climb and cruise data, range and endurance.
- Weight And Balance. The individual aircraft's equipment list, as-weighed empty weight and CG, loading arms and the CG envelope.
- Airplane And Systems Description. How the composite airframe, controls, fuel, electrical and pitot-static systems actually work.
- Handling, Servicing And Maintenance. Ground handling, tie-down, canopy care, servicing points and inspection intervals.
- Supplements. One per item of optional or STC equipment installed — avionics, autopilot, and any modification. A supplement can override the main handbook for the system it covers.
How To Read A Performance Chart
Charts are worked the same way in every handbook. Gather your inputs first — pressure altitude, outside air temperature, actual weight, wind component, runway surface and slope. Enter at the chart's left edge, move right to the reference line, then follow the guide lines proportionally to your weight, then your wind, then your obstacle height, and read the answer at the right edge. Then apply margin: the book figures were flown by a test pilot in a new aeroplane using an exact technique described in the chart notes, and a school aircraft with hours on the airframe flown by a student will not match them.
Why POH Figures Are Aircraft-Specific
Handbooks are issued by serial number range and revision level, and the weight and balance section belongs to one individual aircraft. Two DA20s on the same ramp can differ meaningfully in empty weight because of different avionics fits, different interiors and different accumulated modifications, and that difference comes straight out of useful load. A handbook downloaded from the internet has no revision status and no connection to the aeroplane in front of you. It is a study aid, not an operating document.

We do not host, reproduce or distribute the Diamond Pilot's Operating Handbook. It is a copyrighted publication of Diamond Aircraft, and beyond the copyright question an uncontrolled copy carries a real safety risk — a superseded handbook is worse than no handbook.
- Order the current manual and revision service directly from Diamond Aircraft's publications or customer support department, quoting your aircraft's serial number.
- Order through an authorised Diamond dealer or service centre, who can confirm the correct document number for your serial.
- If you own the aircraft, the original manual should have transferred with it; Diamond can supply a replacement keyed to the serial number.
- If you are training or renting, the operator's aircraft carries its own manual. Ask to read it on the ground before you fly — any good school will hand it to you.
Plainly stated: the official, current, FAA-approved flight manual issued for a specific tail number is the only legal authority for the operation of that aircraft. This page is not a substitute for it, and neither is any PDF you find online.
What It Is Like To Fly
The first impression is the view. You sit low, reclined, under a canopy that curves away above and beside you, and there is nothing between you and the horizon. Pilots stepping out of a high-wing trainer often describe it as the difference between looking out of a window and sitting outside.
Taxiing takes a few minutes to learn because of the castering nosewheel: you steer with the brakes and you plan turns rather than react to them. Once that clicks, it is entirely natural.
In the air the DA20 is light and responsive. The stick is direct, roll rate is brisk for a trainer, and the aircraft goes where you point it with very little effort. The long wing shows itself in the climb — a well-loaded DA20 climbs away smartly on 125 horsepower — and again in the glide, where the aircraft simply does not want to come down. Engine-out practice in a DA20 covers a lot of ground.
The stall is benign, with clear buffet warning and a straightforward recovery. On landing, that efficient wing is the thing to respect: arrive even a few knots fast and the DA20 will float down the runway in ground effect. Fly the book speed on final and it settles nicely. Students who learn speed control in a DA20 tend to carry that discipline into everything they fly afterwards.
