That is the shortest drive to a training aeroplane of any community in the San Fernando Valley: from most of the 91335 the airport is not somewhere you travel to, it is the next thing along Saticoy Street.

Three Miles, And You Pick The Boulevard
Reseda's grid runs straight into the airport's, so almost any east–west road works — use whichever one you live nearest.
Saticoy St is the sharpest: it runs east from Reseda Blvd and meets Balboa Blvd almost exactly at our corner, so you turn once and you have arrived. Sherman Way, one long block south, drops you onto Balboa just below the door. From the north end of the 91335 take Roscoe Blvd east and come down Balboa from above; from the south end, Victory Blvd east runs along the bottom of the Sepulveda Basin.
Nobody in Reseda should use a freeway for this. The 405 is east of the airport and the 101 is south of everything; both add distance in order to add traffic. Seven minutes is the honest average, and the gap between the quietest hour and the evening peak is about four minutes.

The $8,400 Route, Described Honestly
The cheapest real certificate we teach is the Sport Pilot at $8,400. It is a genuine FAA certificate, not a taster, and it costs less because the FAA minimum behind it is 20 hours rather than the 40 a Private Pilot requires under Part 61 — fewer required hours, less aircraft time, lower total.
It is the right answer for a specific person: someone content to fly a light aeroplane in good weather and daylight with one other seat filled. If that is you, do not let anyone talk you into more.
The arithmetic that matters is the gap. Private Pilot — Standard is $10,400 — $2,000 more for a certificate that lets you fly at night, carry more people, add an instrument rating and rent a wider range of aeroplanes. That $2,000 is also less than deciding in three years that you wanted the bigger certificate and buying the extra hours then. Work out which pilot you intend to be first; the in-person consultation that does exactly that costs $0.
What One Lesson Actually Costs
Nobody hands over $10,400 in a single transaction, and the question people here actually want answered is what a Tuesday evening costs.
Two numbers sit underneath everything: aircraft time is $179 an hour and instructor time is $110 an hour, charged on the ground as well as in the air, because the briefing and the debrief are where much of the learning happens. A lesson built around one flying hour therefore lands around $340 to $390 all in — the real unit of flight training, and the number to budget against.
Two things bring it down. Ground instruction alone is $110 an hour and covers much of what you must know without burning aircraft time. And the Redbird full-motion simulator is $120 an hour inside a course — $189 standalone — where a procedure can be flown over and over with no weather and no preflight. These are not a consolation prize for a cancelled lesson; they are how a careful student keeps the total down.

Why Seven Minutes Is A Money Question
Distance to the airport is usually sold as convenience. From Reseda it is better understood as pricing.
If your drive is forty minutes each way, a one-hour lesson costs the best part of three hours, so you stop booking one-hour lessons. You book two-hour blocks to justify the journey, at double the money each time, and that pushes lessons further apart — the most expensive habit in flight training, because every gap is paid for twice.
From Reseda the drive is seven minutes, so a short lesson is a rational booking: fly for an hour after work, be home before the evening is gone, and do it more often for less money per sitting. Reseda From A Thousand Feet
The Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area sits immediately east of the 91335, and from the air it stops being a set of separate destinations and becomes one deliberate gap in the grid — the only place for miles where the city stops and the ground is allowed to be empty. Lake Balboa is the obvious ring of water, and threading past it is the concrete channel of the Los Angeles River: a pale, ruler-straight line running east across the basin floor.
Then Reseda itself, where the geometry reads best. Reseda Blvd runs the entire width of the Valley floor north to south, and from the air you follow it much further than you ever have by car. Victory Blvd, Sherman Way and Saticoy St rule across it at right angles, and the blocks between them are as close to a perfect grid as Los Angeles gets — with your own roof in it, once you find the right corner.
Beyond that the ground rises on three sides — the Santa Monica Mountains south, the Santa Susanas north-west, the San Gabriels east. From the middle of the Valley you see all three at once, which is not a view Reseda gets from the ground.
