Calabasas is about fourteen miles from Van Nuys Airport, a straight run east on the 101 and then north on Balboa Blvd, and that airport is where Calabasas residents learn to fly. Fourteen Miles, Two Turns
The drive is simple enough to describe in one sentence: 101 east, exit Balboa Blvd, turn north, keep going.
In detail: pick up the 101 eastbound at Las Virgenes Rd or Parkway Calabasas and stay on it for about ten miles through Woodland Hills, Tarzana and Encino. Exit at Balboa Blvd, turn left, and drive north roughly four and a half miles. Balboa carries you through Encino, across Burbank Blvd, through the Sepulveda Basin alongside Lake Balboa, over Victory, Vanowen and Sherman Way, and up the western edge of Van Nuys Airport. Off-peak that is 22 to 28 minutes. In weekday peak, when the 101 eastbound through Woodland Hills is loaded, expect 35 to 50 minutes.
The alternative when the 101 is stopped is to come off it early at Winnetka or Reseda and take Victory Blvd or Vanowen Blvd east to Balboa. It is slower on paper and faster in practice at 8:15 on a Tuesday. Note also that Balboa Blvd through the Sepulveda Basin can close after heavy winter rain; Woodley Ave is the parallel road.
What Calabasas Looks Like From The Airplane
Calabasas is one of the more rewarding places in Los Angeles County to see from a light aircraft, because it sits right on the boundary between city and wilderness and that boundary is invisible from the ground.
Flying south-west from Van Nuys, you cross the Valley floor and then the Santa Monica Mountains rise up in front of you. Below is the whole Malibu Canyon and Las Virgenes corridor — the road threading down through the rock toward the coast, Malibu Creek State Park spread out either side of it, and the reservoir at Malibou Lake. Calabasas Peak and Saddle Peak stand out on the ridge line.
Then the ridge drops away and there is nothing but the Pacific. That transition — grid, then mountains, then open ocean, in about four minutes of flying — is what people remember. On a clear day you can see Point Dume to the west and Santa Monica Bay curving away east, with Catalina on the horizon. The route back up over the hills gives you the Valley laid out in front of you with the San Gabriels behind it.

The recipient does fly the airplane. An FAA-certificated instructor sits in the right seat and handles the takeoff and landing, and somewhere over the Santa Monica Mountains they hand over the controls. That is not a demonstration ride; if they later decide to train, the hour is loggable toward their certificate.
If The Gift Turns Into A Licence
A reasonable proportion of people who are given a flight come back and start training, so it is worth knowing what that commits you to before you buy.
A private pilot certificate requires a minimum of 40 hours of flight time under 14 CFR 61.109, of which at least 20 must be with an instructor and 10 solo. The national average is closer to 60 to 70 hours, because the minimum assumes perfectly efficient training and nobody trains perfectly efficiently. You also need an FAA medical certificate before your first solo, a written knowledge test, and a practical test with a designated examiner.
None of that has to happen fast. There is no expiry on a partly completed certificate, and plenty of people fly once a week for a year. What does matter is that stopping and restarting is expensive, so the honest advice to anyone in Calabasas considering it is: work out whether you can protect two mornings a month before you begin, not after.
The other thing worth saying plainly is that Calabasas is a fourteen-mile drive, not a five-minute one. That is fine for a once-a-week rhythm and grinding for a daily one.
