Discovery Flight Near Calabasas — 60 Minutes From $229

From Calabasas a discovery flight means sixteen miles east on the 101 to Van Nuys Airport — roughly twenty-five minutes — and $229 for 60 minutes in which you fly the aeroplane and a certificated flight instructor teaches from the seat beside you. You Fly LA is at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Van Nuys, CA 91406.

Calabasas Sits On The Malibu Side Of The Hill

Geography does something useful for Calabasas that it does not do for most of Los Angeles. You are already at the crest of the Santa Monica Mountains rather than behind them, which means the coast is not a long leg at the end of a flight — it is about four minutes beyond your own house.

That is why the two-person Malibu Coast route reads as the local flight from here. Leaving Van Nuys westbound, the aeroplane crosses the west Valley, comes over Calabasas, and then over the ridge at Malibu Canyon, and the Pacific is simply there. Malibu Creek State Park is directly below on the way across — the rock formations, the lake, the long valley the creek cuts through. Calabasas Peak and the Cold Creek canyons stand just to the south, and the grid of Old Town Calabasas and the Commons sits at the foot of them where Mulholland Hwy meets Calabasas Rd.

Once you cross, the coastline runs both ways: Malibu Pier and the point at Pepperdine to the east, Zuma and Point Dume to the west. On a clear winter afternoon the Channel Islands are on the horizon. Sixty minutes reaches the water and comes back; ninety lets you fly the coastline instead of glimpsing it.

Sixteen Miles East On The 101

The drive is one freeway and one street. 101 east from Calabasas Pkwy or Las Virgenes Rd to the Balboa Blvd exit in Encino, then north on Balboa for just under four miles to number 7900. Sixteen miles, twenty to twenty-eight minutes off-peak.

The catch is the direction of the peak. Eastbound 101 out of Calabasas between roughly 7 and 9:30 in the morning is the heavy commute direction, and the stretch through Woodland Hills and Tarzana is where it stalls; a 9 am booking can turn into a forty-minute drive. Westbound in the evening is the same problem in reverse, which matters for the trip home rather than the trip out. Mid-morning and early afternoon slots are the easy ones from Calabasas, and weekends are trivial.

Calabasas To Van Nuys Airport
From Route Off-Peak 8 AM Eastbound
Calabasas Rd & Parkway Calabasas 101 east, Balboa Blvd north 20–26 min 32–42 min
Las Virgenes Rd & Mulholland Hwy Las Virgenes north to 101 east 24–30 min 36–46 min
Calabasas Hills / Mountain View Down to the 101, east to Balboa 22–28 min 34–44 min
West Calabasas near Valley Circle Valley Circle north, Victory Blvd east 24–30 min 28–34 min

That last row is the local's route. If the 101 is red, Valley Circle Blvd north and then Victory Blvd east crosses the west Valley on surface streets and ignores the freeway completely.

The Two-Person Malibu Coast Route

The named two-person flights are $299 for 60 minutes, $399 for 90 and $499 for 120, on either the Malibu Coast or the Downtown Los Angeles route. From Calabasas the coast version is the one that uses your geography: you overfly your own canyon on the way out, and the second person has a proper seat and a proper view rather than a jump seat.

If you would rather fly alone, the single-seat discovery flight is $229, $299 and $399 for the three lengths. And the Luxury Cirrus SR22 For Two — side-yoke, glass panel, whole-airframe parachute — is $399, $549 and $699.

What A Discovery Flight Includes

An hour of flight time is the headline, but the product is a first lesson. You get a briefing at a table before anything happens, a preflight inspection of the aeroplane that you perform with the instructor, the flight itself with you in the pilot's seat, and a debrief at the end. Two hours at the airport for a 60-minute flight is the honest figure.

During the flight you do the flying. The instructor takes off and lands, remains on the controls throughout and teaches continuously, but the climbs, turns, level flight and descents are yours. The hour is logged as dual instruction received toward the 40-hour Part 61 minimum for a private pilot certificate. There is a step-by-step version on what a discovery flight actually is.

Aircraft, Weight And Requirements

The Piper Warrior PA-28-161 is the standard aeroplane — low wing, four seats, honest controls. Limits are 180 lb per person and 360 lb combined. The Cirrus SR22 allows 200 lb per person and 400 lb combined.

You need a photo ID and nothing else. No experience, no FAA medical certificate — the instructor is pilot in command — and no minimum age, though a parent or guardian must sign for anyone under 18. Van Nuys is a tower-controlled Class D field under the shelves of the Los Angeles Class B, which is described on our page about KVNY, the airport you fly from.

Weather Windows

Calabasas residents know the marine layer better than most inland communities, because it comes up the canyons from Malibu. In May and June it can hold over the crest well into the late morning, and when it is sitting on your ridge it is usually also sitting on the Valley. Those are the flights that get moved.

Midsummer is the opposite problem: the heat raises density altitude, the aeroplane climbs less eagerly, and the air over the Santa Monica Mountains turns rough in the afternoon. Early and late slots are noticeably smoother. If we cancel for weather you pay nothing, and rescheduling is free for any reason up to 24 hours ahead — our weather and cancellation policy has the detail.
