Twenty-Eight Miles Of The 101, Eastbound

The drive is one road. 101 east from Thousand Oaks through Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, Calabasas and Woodland Hills to the Balboa Blvd exit in Encino, then north on Balboa for just under four miles. Twenty-eight miles, thirty to forty minutes when the freeway is moving.

When it is not moving, it is because you are travelling in the commute direction. Eastbound 101 out of the Conejo Valley between about 6:30 and 9:30 on a weekday is the heavy flow, and westbound between 3:30 and 7:00 is the return — so a morning booking has a slow drive out, and a late-afternoon booking has a slow drive home. Mid-morning through early afternoon is the clean window, and weekends are a straightforward thirty minutes.

From Newbury Park add five or six minutes at the start. From Westlake Village subtract three or four. From the north side of town, the 23 down to the 101 is the connector, and it is rarely the problem.

From Van Nuys, a discovery flight can go west over the mountains to Malibu, south-east to the Hollywood Sign and downtown, or north over the Santa Susanas — and from Thousand Oaks you are buying access to a much larger map than your own valley. The View Back Toward Boney Mountain

A westbound leg from Van Nuys puts the Conejo Valley at the far end of the flight, and the shape of the trip is a good one: out across the Valley, over the ridge, and then a long look back at your own side of the county line.

The Simi Hills come first on the right, with Ahmanson Ranch and the open grassland of the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon preserve on their south flank. Then the 101 corridor itself, which from the air is a thin line threading between hills — the reason the Conejo Valley feels separate from Los Angeles becomes geometrically obvious. Westlake Lake and Lake Sherwood show as two very different pieces of water, one engineered into a suburb and one tucked into a canyon.

To the south-west the Santa Monica Mountains rise toward Boney Mountain and the Point Mugu State Park high country, which from Thousand Oaks is a familiar skyline and from an aeroplane is a genuine mountain range dropping into the sea. On a clear afternoon the coast beyond it runs from Point Mugu down past Zuma and Point Dume, with the Channel Islands sitting off the horizon. How A Discovery Flight Works

You fly it. That is the whole idea. You sit in the left seat, the instructor sits in the right, and after the takeoff — which the instructor flies — the aeroplane does what you tell it for most of the hour. Climbs, turns, holding an altitude, the descent back toward the Valley. The instructor stays on the controls and on the radio and teaches the entire time, then lands it.

Before the flight there is a briefing and a preflight walk-round you do together; afterwards, a debrief. Budget two hours at the airport for a 60-minute flight. From this far west the length question matters more than it does for someone in Van Nuys, because of the drive. Sixty minutes is a complete first lesson and the right choice if you are unsure how you will feel in a small aeroplane.
