Four Miles Up Balboa, No Freeway Required

Encino has the simplest commute to a flight school of any community in Los Angeles, and the reason is one street. Balboa Blvd begins at Ventura Blvd in Encino and runs north without interruption — under the 101, through the Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area, past Lake Balboa — to the west side of Van Nuys Airport. Our address sits on that same road, between Saticoy St and Roscoe Blvd. You cross Burbank, Victory, Vanowen, Sherman Way and Saticoy, and then you are there.

That drive has no rush-hour version, because there is no freeway in it. The 405 is two miles east and you should ignore it: getting on at Ventura and off at Roscoe adds distance and drops you into the Sepulveda Pass flow, the worst road in the Valley between four and seven. Encino may be the only community we serve where the surface route beats the freeway at every hour of the day.

Two variants. From the 91436 side — Encino Hills, the streets climbing toward Mulholland — you first come down Hayvenhurst Ave, Balboa Blvd or Encino Ave to Ventura, adding four to seven minutes depending how high you live. From the west end of 91316, White Oak Ave north to Victory Blvd then east to Balboa is a clean alternative, and it is also your detour on the rare winter day when the Sepulveda Basin is holding storm water and Balboa is closed through it. The basin is a flood-control reservoir; occasionally it does the job it was built for.

What Encino Looks Like In The First Ten Minutes

The airport is four miles away and almost everything in between is open ground, so the view starts immediately. The Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area is under the wing within about two minutes — the same basin you drove through on Balboa, now resolved into its parts. The Sepulveda Dam anchors the east end, Lake Balboa is the obvious ring of water with its path around it, and between them sit the golf courses, the wildlife reserve and the concrete channel of the Los Angeles River. From 1,500 feet it reads as a hole deliberately left empty in an otherwise total grid, and the reason becomes self-evident.

Turn south and Encino arrives. Ventura Boulevard runs east–west along the foot of the hills, and the office towers around Ventura and Balboa are the one place the boulevard has anything like a skyline between Sherman Oaks and Warner Center. Just east of them, Los Encinos State Historic Park on Moorpark St shows up as a green rectangle with a pond in it — the de la Osa Adobe and the springs the whole community is named for, sitting mid-block, invisible unless you are above it.

Then the Santa Monica Mountains ridge fills the windscreen, Mulholland tracing the top and Encino Hills stepping up the north face. The Encino Reservoir is the surprise — water folded into a canyon on the far side of the ridge that most Encino residents have never seen, because from the ground there is a mountain in the way. From the air it is obvious, about ninety seconds past the boulevard, and beyond it the ridge drops into the Westside with Santa Monica Bay behind on a clear winter afternoon.

Encino students spend the first minute of a discovery flight looking for their own roof. Almost all of them find it, because from up there Balboa Blvd is a straight line pointing at the house.

Why Van Nuys Is The Right Field For Encino

Encino sits directly south of Van Nuys Airport, so the field's traffic has been part of your sky for as long as you have lived here. It is also the practical choice by a wide margin.

Whiteman in Pacoima is roughly three times the drive, on the far side of the Valley, and a smaller field with far less training capacity. Hollywood Burbank is a commercial airline airport in Class C airspace — you can train there, but you will be sequenced behind airliners, and sharing a field with scheduled jets is not a good use of a student's money. Camarillo is an excellent airport thirty-plus miles up the 101 over the Conejo Grade: an hour each way in the evening, which quietly doubles the cost of every lesson in time.

Van Nuys is Class D, tower-controlled, with parallel runways — 16R/34L is 8,001 feet — beneath the shelves of the Los Angeles Class B. The unglamorous argument is the strongest. Training rewards frequency: two lessons a week produces a certificate faster and for less total money than one, because you spend less of each hour re-learning what went stale. At nine minutes door to door, an Encino student can fly Tuesday at 6 pm and Saturday at 9 am without either eating the day — and can take the 5:30 slot we call about at 4:40. Encino is two ZIP codes with two rather different flying populations. 91316 is the flats north and south of Ventura Boulevard; 91436 is Encino Hills, climbing toward Mulholland, and one of the highest-income ZIP codes within ten minutes of Van Nuys Airport. That shows up in what people book.

From 91436 the usual first booking is the Luxury Cirrus SR22 For Two — $399 for 60 minutes, $549 for 90, $699 for 120. The SR22 is a different animal from a training Piper: side-yoke control, a large glass panel, leather, and a whole-airframe parachute system. Two people fly and both see everything. Weight limit is 200 lb per person, 400 lb combined.
