Van Nuys Airport occupies roughly a square mile between Woodley Ave and Balboa Blvd, Sherman Way and Roscoe Blvd. Our building is on the Balboa side, so from anywhere in the 91406 the trip is a matter of blocks rather than freeways. From the Van Nuys Civic Center on Van Nuys Blvd it is about three miles west on Sherman Way or Saticoy St — eight to twelve minutes, and the only thing that slows it down is the signal timing on Woodley.
Nobody in Van Nuys needs the 405 or the 101 to get here, which is the quiet reason this works as a first flight. There is no version of the drive that collapses at 5:30 pm. If we call at 4:40 because a 5:30 slot has opened, a Van Nuys resident can take it.

Van Nuys Airport is a tower-controlled Class D field sitting under the shelves of the Los Angeles Class B, with parallel runways — 16R/34L is 8,001 feet long. That matters more than it sounds: from your very first hour you are talking on a tower frequency and fitting into genuinely busy airspace rather than practising on an empty strip. What Happens In The Two Hours You Are Here
Budget about two hours at the airport for a 60-minute flight. The flight time is the time in the air; the rest is the part that turns it from a ride into a lesson.
You arrive, we take a photo ID, and your instructor sits down with you for a proper preflight briefing — where you are going, what the airplane does, what you will be doing with the controls. Then you walk out to the airplane and do the preflight inspection together, which means fuel, oil, control surfaces, tyres and a walk right around it. You get in the left seat. Your instructor starts the engine with you, talks you through the taxi, and handles the takeoff with you following through on the controls.
Then it becomes your airplane. Climbs, turns, descents, level flight, the feel of the trim, the way the nose wants to drop in a turn if you do not hold it. Your instructor is on the radio and beside the controls the whole time, but the flying in between takeoff and landing is genuinely yours. The hour is logged as dual instruction received in a logbook with your name on it. If you go on to train for a private pilot certificate, it counts toward the 40-hour Part 61 minimum. Nothing is repeated and nothing is wasted.
The Route Over Van Nuys, Minute By Minute
Living under the departure path means you already know the shape of it. Flying it is different, because for the first time you are the one deciding where the airplane points.
Off the runway, the Valley floor opens out immediately and the grid resolves: Sherman Way, Victory, Vanowen, Saticoy, and Van Nuys Blvd running north to south through the middle of it. Almost every Van Nuys resident spends the first ninety seconds finding their own street, and almost all of them succeed, because the airport is the reference point and you know exactly where you live relative to it.
Turn south and the Sepulveda Basin arrives within two minutes — the dam at the east end, Lake Balboa as a clear ring of water, the golf courses and the concrete channel of the Los Angeles River running through it. Beyond that the ground rises into the Santa Monica Mountains, with Mulholland Drive tracing the crest.
From there the flight goes one of two ways. Eastbound takes you along the ridge toward Cahuenga Pass, where the Hollywood Sign on Mount Lee and the domes of Griffith Observatory come up on the left, with the downtown Los Angeles skyline standing on the plain behind them. Westbound crosses the mountains near Malibu Canyon and puts you over the Malibu coastline and Santa Monica Bay, which on a clear winter afternoon runs from Point Dume all the way round to Palos Verdes. The Airplane, And Who Fits In It
The standard discovery flight is flown in a Piper Warrior PA-28-161, a four-seat, low-wing trainer with a good forward view and controls that are honest enough to learn on. The two-person luxury option uses a Cirrus SR22 — side-yoke, a large glass panel, and a whole-airframe parachute system.
Weight limits are set by the aircraft, not by us: 180 lb per person and 360 lb combined in the Warrior; 200 lb per person and 400 lb combined in the Cirrus. There is no minimum age to fly a discovery flight, and anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian to sign. You do not need an FAA medical certificate, because your instructor is the pilot in command. When The Weather Says No
Van Nuys has two seasonal patterns worth knowing before you pick a date. From roughly May into June the marine layer pushes over the Santa Monica Mountains overnight and can sit on the Valley until late morning, which is why early slots in that window get moved more often than any others. In high summer the heat raises density altitude, so the aeroplane climbs less willingly in the middle of the afternoon and the air over the ridges gets bumpy; mornings and evenings are smoother and cooler.
