From Nordhoff St and Reseda Blvd, the simplest route is Nordhoff east to Balboa Blvd and then south — about six miles, thirteen to eighteen minutes. Roscoe Blvd east does the same job one mile south, and from the Porter Ranch side the 118 east to the Balboa Blvd exit, then south is quicker still.

Northridge is one of the easy ones. There is no freeway bottleneck between you and the airport, nothing that collapses at half past five, and the whole trip is on streets you already use. What Northridge Students See First

The airport is close enough that Northridge is under the wing almost as soon as the aeroplane is cleaned up after takeoff, and the first thing most people find is the CSUN campus, which from the air is an obvious rectangle of low buildings, playing fields and car parks in the middle of a residential grid. The Northridge Fashion Center is the other easy fix, and between the two you can trace Nordhoff and Reseda well enough to find your own street.

Look north and the ground changes character fast. The Santa Susana Mountains close off the top of the Valley, with Porter Ranch climbing the lower slopes and the 118 running east to west along the foot of them. West of that the Chatsworth Reservoir basin and the Simi Hills sit in open country, and the Santa Susana Pass is the notch the railway and the old road use to get through to Simi Valley — a piece of geography that explains the whole shape of the west Valley once you have seen it from above.

Turn south instead and the flight runs down the Valley toward the Sepulveda Basin and the Santa Monica Mountains, with the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory ten or so minutes to the south-east and the Malibu coast about the same distance to the south-west. Sixty minutes from Northridge covers the north end properly and reaches one of those two; ninety does both.

That north-then-south shape is particular to bookings from this end of the Valley. Someone flying from Pasadena or Glendale spends their hour east of the airport and may never see the Santa Susanas at all; from Northridge the mountains are the opening act and the city is the second half. The Fleet And The Weight Limits

The standard discovery flight uses a Piper Warrior PA-28-161: four seats, low wing, the sort of aeroplane that teaches you something honest about flying. Limits are 180 lb per person and 360 lb combined.

The two-person premium option is the Cirrus SR22, with a side-yoke, a large glass panel and a whole-airframe parachute system; limits there are 200 lb per person and 400 lb combined.
