The nearest flight school to Tarzana is You Fly LA at Van Nuys Airport — about 5.5 miles and roughly eleven minutes east and north, at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Van Nuys, CA 91406. Tarzana (ZIP 91356) has no airfield, so there is no closer place to take a flying lesson, and the drive is short enough that a weeknight lesson does not cost you the evening.

Five And A Half Miles, Two Ways To Drive It
Tarzana's centre of gravity is Ventura Blvd and Reseda Blvd, and from there you have two routes that trade off against each other by time of day.
The boulevard route. East on Ventura Blvd about a mile and three-quarters to Balboa Blvd, then left and north. Balboa runs continuously under the 101, through the Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area, past Lake Balboa, and up the west side of Van Nuys Airport to our door. Signalised the whole way — slow but honest: 11 to 15 minutes most of the day, 16 to 20 at the worst of the evening. Ventura through Tarzana and Encino is never quick, but it never stops either.
The Burbank Boulevard route. Take Reseda Blvd or Tampa Ave north to Burbank Blvd, then east. Burbank crosses the Sepulveda Basin on a straight, largely signal-free stretch past the Japanese Garden and the reclamation plant, and meets Balboa on the far side. Off-peak this is the faster of the two at 10 to 13 minutes, and it is markedly better than Ventura between five and seven because the basin crossing has almost nothing to stop for.
The 101 is the wrong tool from Tarzana: two exits, and the Reseda and Balboa ramps in the evening peak give back everything the freeway gained. What Tarzana Looks Like From The Left Seat
A discovery flight out of Van Nuys typically turns south or south-west, which puts Tarzana under the wing inside the first five minutes. The Sepulveda Basin comes first — the same open ground you drove across on Burbank Blvd, now legible as a deliberate green void with the dam at its east end and Lake Balboa's water in the middle of it. West of the basin the grid resumes and Tarzana's flats spread out: Ventura Blvd running east–west, Reseda, Tampa and Corbin ruled north–south across it, and the low, wide roofs of the Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center campus off Clark St.
The interesting half is south of the boulevard. Tarzana is one of the few Valley communities that genuinely climbs into the Santa Monica Mountains, and from a thousand feet up you can see how. Reseda Blvd runs south off Ventura, keeps going where you might expect it to stop, and dies at the mouth of Caballero Canyon, where the fire road climbs to Dirt Mulholland and the ridge trails beyond. On either side of that climb are the two green shapes everyone spots first: Braemar Country Club on Reseda and El Caballero to the east, two full golf courses stacked into hillside folds that from the ground look like nothing but a wall of chaparral.
Behind them the ridge runs unbroken to Mulholland Drive, and past that the land drops toward the Westside and, on a clear day, the ocean.
The Ranch That Named The Place
Very few places are named after a fictional character, and Tarzana is one of them. In 1919 Edgar Rice Burroughs — by then wealthy from the Tarzan books — bought a large ranch on the south side of what is now Ventura Boulevard and called it Tarzana Ranch. The community that grew around it took the name when it got its own post office, and it has been Tarzana ever since.
It reads as trivia until you fly over it. From a thousand feet the old ranch land is still legible in the way the hillside streets south of Ventura curve against the grid instead of squaring up to it, and the golf courses and remaining large lots mark where the open ground survived. Tarzana is one of the few places in Los Angeles where the aerial view explains the street map.
Why Van Nuys, And Not Somewhere Else
Tarzana is roughly equidistant from nothing. It has one obviously correct airport and several obviously wrong ones.
Camarillo is the tempting one because the 101 points straight at it — until you price the Conejo Grade in evening traffic and find you have added ninety minutes of driving to a ninety-minute lesson. Whiteman in Pacoima means crossing the whole Valley diagonally. Hollywood Burbank is a commercial airline field: Class C airspace, airline sequencing, none of it built around a student in a training aeroplane. Van Nuys is eleven minutes away, Class D with a tower, parallel runways with 16R/34L at 8,001 feet, under the shelves of the Los Angeles Class B.
That airspace is a feature. A Van Nuys student is on the radio from lesson one, working a busy pattern and sequencing with jets, helicopters and other trainers; pilots who learn at quiet fields spend years acquiring that by accident. Our Van Nuys flight training page walks through it in detail.
Fitting Lessons Into A Tarzana Week
Tarzana's median household income is about $107,400 and its working population skews toward medicine, law, small business and professional services — which in practice means fixed weekday hours with some shift work in the mix. We are open 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, seven days a week, and three patterns do most of the work here.
Early morning. Valley air is smooth until about 11 am and the pattern is light, so a 9 am lesson has you back on Ventura Blvd before noon. In summer the afternoon sea breeze through the passes makes the air bumpier and the crosswind more of a factor — good training, less pleasant if you are new. From May into June the marine layer can sit over the field in the morning; we will tell you the night before if it looks likely to move a slot.
Evening. After 6 pm the pattern thins and you get more of your instructor's attention. From November to February a 6 pm slot becomes a night lesson, which you need anyway: night flying, including night takeoffs and landings, is part of the private pilot requirement, so a winter evening does double duty.
The simulator as a schedule fix. When a week collapses, an hour in the full-motion simulator at $189 keeps procedures sharp with no weather and no preflight — the most useful thing a busy Tarzana student can do with an unexpected free hour.
