The multi-engine rating is the shortest, most intense and arguably most fun add-on in general aviation. It takes a week or less for most pilots, costs a fraction of any other rating, and fundamentally changes what you understand about airplane performance. It is also a hard requirement for almost every professional flying job.

What The Multi-Engine Rating Is
The multi-engine rating is a class rating added to an existing pilot certificate, not a separate certificate. You add airplane multi-engine land to whatever you already hold. If you hold a private pilot certificate, you get a private multi-engine rating. If you hold a commercial certificate, you get commercial multi-engine privileges. The training is essentially the same either way; only the checkride standards differ, being tighter at the commercial level.
Twins fly differently. Two engines give you more power, more speed, and redundancy, but they also introduce asymmetric thrust: if one engine quits, the remaining engine produces a yawing and rolling moment that will roll the airplane over if it is not controlled immediately and correctly. Everything in multi-engine training exists to teach you to handle that.
FAA Requirements For A Multi-Engine Rating
This is the appeal of the rating: there is no minimum hour requirement. 14 CFR 61.63 sets out what an additional class rating needs, and there is no specified number of hours.

The fact that no written exam is required is why the multi-engine rating is often described as a three-to-five day rating. Most pilots complete it in a long weekend or a compressed week of two flights a day.
What You Learn: Engine-Out Flying
Roughly seventy percent of multi-engine training is about what happens when one engine stops. The concepts below are the core of the course and the core of the checkride.
V-Speeds That Only Exist In Twins
VMC is the minimum control speed with the critical engine inoperative — the slowest speed at which you can maintain directional control. Below it, full rudder is not enough and the airplane will roll toward the dead engine. VYSE, the blue line speed, is the best rate of climb with one engine out and is the speed you fly whenever an engine fails in the climb. VSSE is the safe single-engine speed below which you do not intentionally shut down an engine. These three numbers govern everything.
The Critical Engine And Asymmetric Thrust
On most conventional twins both propellers turn the same direction, which means the loss of one engine produces a larger yawing moment than the loss of the other. That engine is the critical engine. You learn why, through the four aerodynamic factors: P-factor, accelerated slipstream, spiraling slipstream, and torque. Counter-rotating twins such as the Piper Seminole eliminate the critical engine, which is one reason they are popular trainers.
Identify, Verify, Feather
The engine-failure drill becomes muscle memory: control the airplane, pitch for blue line, mixtures, props and throttles forward, gear and flaps up, identify the dead engine by which foot is doing nothing, verify by retarding that throttle, then feather the propeller to eliminate the enormous drag of a windmilling prop. You practice this on takeoff, in the climb, in cruise, and on approach, again and again, until it is automatic.
VMC Demonstration And Drag Demonstration
Two maneuvers unique to the multi-engine checkride. In the VMC demonstration you slow the airplane with one engine simulated inoperative until you reach either the first indication of loss of directional control or the stall warning, and recover. In the drag demonstration your instructor shows you how dramatically gear, flaps, a windmilling propeller and even a few degrees of bank in the wrong direction destroy single-engine climb performance. It is the most sobering lesson in the course.
Single-Engine Performance: The Real Lesson
The most important thing multi-engine training teaches is that a light twin with one engine out is not a two-engine airplane with power to spare. It is an underpowered single with the drag of a dead engine. A typical light twin loses roughly eighty percent of its excess climb performance when one engine fails. Single-engine service ceilings are often only a few thousand feet, and on a hot Los Angeles afternoon may be below terrain. The second engine buys you time and options, not immunity. The two standards at Van Nuys and across the country are the Piper Seminole and the Piper Seneca. The Seminole is a light, counter-rotating four-seat twin that is forgiving and the most common training platform in the United States. The Seneca is heavier, faster, and often turbocharged, and gives a better sense of what a working twin feels like. Beechcraft Barons and Duchesses appear at some schools. The Multi-Engine Checkride
There is no written test, so the checkride is the entire evaluation. The oral covers multi-engine aerodynamics in depth: the critical engine and why, all the V-speeds and where they come from, single-engine performance and service ceilings, propeller feathering and unfeathering, systems including fuel crossfeed and the electrical and hydraulic architecture, and the decision-making around whether to continue or land after a failure.
The flight portion is typically 1.5 to 2 hours: normal and crosswind takeoffs and landings, steep turns, slow flight and stalls, the VMC demonstration, engine failure during takeoff and after liftoff, engine shutdown and restart in flight at a safe altitude, single-engine approaches and landings, and a single-engine go-around. If you hold an instrument rating and want instrument privileges in a multi-engine airplane, an instrument approach with one engine inoperative is added.

Multi-engine flight time is expensive per hour — twins burn roughly twice the fuel and cost far more to maintain and insure — but you need very few hours of it, so the total is modest. The main way to control cost is to arrive prepared: know the V-speeds, the aerodynamics of the critical engine, and the engine-failure flow cold before you sit in the airplane, so you are not paying twin rates to learn things from a book.
Combining Private, Multi-Engine And Instrument Training
Pilots searching for private multi-engine instrument rating are usually looking for one of two things. The first is a combined program that takes you from zero through private, instrument and multi-engine in a single planned sequence, which is how the airline career track is normally structured and is more efficient than buying each rating separately. The second is multi-engine instrument privileges: if you hold an instrument rating and want to exercise it in a twin, your multi-engine checkride needs to include a single-engine instrument approach, otherwise your rating will be limited to VFR only. Ask for this explicitly — adding it later means another checkride.
Who Should Get A Multi-Engine Rating
If you are heading toward a professional flying career, you will need it. Airlines, charter operators and corporate flight departments all fly multi-engine aircraft, and multi-engine time is what makes a logbook competitive. If you fly privately, the case is about capability: twins are faster, carry more, and give redundancy over water, mountains and at night — all relevant when you are flying out of Los Angeles.
