For Westlake Village, the practical flight school is You Fly LA at Van Nuys Airport — 21.7 miles, about 29 minutes, straight east on the 101 and then north on Balboa Blvd to 7900 Balboa Blvd, Van Nuys, CA 91406. There is no airfield in the community itself, and because 91361 and 91362 sit at the eastern end of the Conejo Valley, Van Nuys rather than Camarillo is the field the geography points to.
Two things dominate what gets booked from here: the Cirrus SR22 flight for two and the gift certificate. This page covers both, plus the honest version of the Camarillo comparison.
Twenty-Two Miles East, And Why East Is The Easy Direction
Join the 101 eastbound at Lindero Canyon Road or Westlake Blvd. Twelve miles later you have passed Agoura Hills, Calabasas and Woodland Hills; another five and you are at the Balboa Blvd exit in Encino, where you turn north and follow one street to the airport's west boundary. The last stretch runs through the Sepulveda Basin and past Lake Balboa, and it is the pleasant part of the drive.
The important thing about this route is what it lacks. No pass, no grade, no second freeway. That matters because the Conejo Grade — the seven-hundred-foot climb closing the western end of the valley — is the piece of road that makes every westbound trip out here unpredictable, and heading east you never meet it. Off-peak, 29 minutes is real. In the weekday morning eastbound peak, budget 45 to 60. Coming home between four and seven is the slower leg, which is why we steer Westlake Village bookings to 6 PM or later; the schedule runs until 9:00 PM every day of the week.
| Starting Point | Route | Typical Drive |
|---|---|---|
| Westlake Blvd & the 101 (91362) | 101 east, exit Balboa Blvd, north 4.5 mi | 29–34 min |
| Lindero Canyon Rd (91361) | 101 east, exit Balboa Blvd, north | 27–32 min |
| Westlake Island / the lake shore | Westlake Blvd to the 101 east, exit Balboa Blvd | 29–35 min |
| Triunfo Canyon Rd, south side | north to the 101 east, exit Balboa Blvd | 31–37 min |
| Any of the above, weekday AM peak | same route, eastbound 101 loaded | 45–60 min |
The Premium Tiers, And The Gift That Works Here
Westlake Village is a community of roughly 7,743 people with a median household income near $180,000 — small, and the highest-income sizeable community in our catchment. In practice that means we see fewer bookings from here than from Woodland Hills, and a very different mix.
The usual first booking is the Luxury Cirrus SR22 For Two — $399 for 60 minutes, $549 for 90, $699 for 120. The SR22 is a different aircraft from a training Piper in every way a first-time passenger notices: side-yoke control, a large integrated glass panel, leather, air conditioning, and CAPS, the whole-airframe parachute system that can lower the entire aeroplane under canopy. Two people fly and both see everything; nobody is stuck behind a wing. Weight limits are 200 lb per person and 400 lb combined. The Cirrus SR22 page covers the aircraft properly, and aircraft rental at Van Nuys covers what you can fly afterwards at $479 an hour.
The second thing this ZIP code buys is the certificate rather than the date. A You Fly LA gift card is the version of this that works as a birthday, anniversary or graduation present for someone whose calendar you cannot see, and the flying lesson gift certificate page explains how it redeems. For a family celebration or a company offsite, groups and events runs several aircraft with staggered departures on the same route. If you want the coastline version, the Malibu Coast Discovery Flight For Two is $299 / $399 / $499 and flies the ridge and shoreline you already drive to.
| Item | Detail | Price |

| Luxury Cirrus SR22 For Two | 60 / 90 / 120 min | $399 / $549 / $699 |
| Discovery Flight For Two — Malibu Coast | 60 / 90 / 120 min | $299 / $399 / $499 |
| Discovery Flight | 60 / 90 / 120 min, one person | $229 / $299 / $399 |
| Full-Motion Simulator | 60 min, Redbird | $189 |
| Free In-Person Consultation | at 7900 Balboa Blvd | $0 |
| Private Pilot — Turbo Cirrus | 40 hours, in the SR22T | $23,400 |
| Private Pilot — Standard | 40 hours, Part 61 minimum | $10,400 |
| Instrument Rating | add-on rating | $11,700 |
| Cirrus rental, per hour | SR20 / SR22, after checkout | $479 |
| Instructor, per hour | flight or ground | $110 |
Every figure is the true total. Our booking products carry no tax and no booking fee — $229 is the total, and $699 is $699. On the two Private Pilot tiers we will give you the unprofitable answer: take Standard at $10,400 unless you genuinely intend to own or routinely fly an SR22T, because the certificate is identical and you can transition into type later. Camarillo Or Van Nuys, From The Eastern Conejo
Camarillo is a real airport and a good one, and for parts of the Conejo Valley it is the right answer. Westlake Village is not one of those parts, and the reason is position rather than preference.
Westlake Village sits at the eastern end of the valley, against the Los Angeles County line. Reaching Camarillo means driving west through the whole of Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park and then down the Conejo Grade onto the Oxnard Plain — the entire Conejo Valley plus its one genuine hill, in the direction where the freeway is least predictable. Van Nuys is 21.7 flat miles the other way, with the morning flow running against you rather than with you.
Then there is weather, which matters more than most people expect. Camarillo sits close to the coastal plain and collects considerably more marine layer mornings, and in May and June that is the difference between a lesson that flies and a lesson that gets rescheduled. Van Nuys is inland and typically burns off earlier. Over a 40-hour certificate a handful of scrubbed mornings a month adds up to real weeks. If you live at the western end — Newbury Park, west Thousand Oaks — the arithmetic genuinely flips, and our Thousand Oaks page works that version through honestly.
The Lake, The County Line And The First Eight Minutes
Westbound out of Van Nuys you cross the Valley floor, Warner Center passes under the wing, and the ground narrows between the Simi Hills to the north and the Santa Monica Mountains to the south. About eight minutes out, Westlake Lake appears — an unmistakable irregular sheet of water with docks all around its edge and Westlake Island sitting in the middle of it, connected by its bridge, a shape that exists nowhere else along this corridor.
What you cannot see from the ground at all is the county line. It runs straight through the community: the incorporated city on the Los Angeles County side, the Ventura County half continuing west without a visible seam. From two thousand feet the whole thing reads as one place, which is a small but genuine pleasure of flying over your own town. South of the lake, Triunfo Canyon cuts back into the range, and beyond the first ridge Lake Sherwood sits in its bowl with the golf course wrapped around it — close enough to Westlake Lake that they appear in the same windscreen, and separated by a mountain on the ground. Carry on south over the ridge and the Pacific opens up past Point Dume.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Far Is Van Nuys Airport From Westlake Village?
21.7 miles, and about 29 minutes when the freeway is clear. It is one road east — the 101 to the Balboa Blvd exit in Encino — then north on Balboa to 7900 Balboa Blvd, Van Nuys, CA 91406. Allow 45 to 60 in the weekday morning peak.
Should I Use Camarillo Instead Of Van Nuys?
Not from Westlake Village. You sit at the eastern end of the Conejo Valley, so Camarillo means driving west through Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park and down the Conejo Grade. Camarillo also collects more marine layer mornings in May and June. If you live in Newbury Park or west Thousand Oaks the answer can change.
How Much Is A Cirrus Flight For Two?
$399 for 60 minutes, $549 for 90 and $699 for 120 in the Cirrus SR22. There is no tax and no booking fee — the listed price is the total you pay. Weight limits are 200 lb per person and 400 lb combined.
Can I Buy A Flight As A Gift?
Yes. Gift cards are available in any amount and apply to any discovery flight, the simulator or a training programme, which avoids having to pick a date for someone else. For a family celebration or a company offsite we also run private group flights with several aircraft departing together.
Will I See Westlake Lake And Lake Sherwood From The Air?
Yes. Westlake Lake with its island appears about eight minutes west of Van Nuys, and Lake Sherwood sits just south of it beyond the first ridge — the two are often in the same windscreen, which is impossible from any road.
Is The Turbo Cirrus Programme Worth $23,400?
Only if you intend to own or routinely fly an SR22T. Private Pilot Standard at $10,400 earns exactly the same certificate and you can transition into a Cirrus afterwards. We will tell you which applies to you at a free in-person consultation rather than sell you the larger number.
