The Drive: Rinaldi To Balboa, Or The 118
Porter Ranch is master-planned and hillside, which means the streets curve and take two or three minutes to get out of. After that it is easy.
Surface streets. Come south off Sesnon or Porter Ranch Drive onto Tampa Ave or Corbin Ave, run down to Rinaldi St and turn east. Rinaldi carries you across Granada Hills to Balboa Blvd. Turn south on Balboa and stay on it — past Devonshire, Nordhoff, Parthenia and Roscoe — and the airport's western boundary appears on your left. Total 7.8 miles, 14 to 18 minutes most of the day.
Freeway. Take the 118 east from Tampa or Reseda, merge onto the 405 south, exit Roscoe Blvd and go west two miles to Balboa. Slightly quicker at 10 a.m., considerably worse at 5 p.m. when the 118-to-405 interchange backs up. For an evening lesson, take Rinaldi.
What You See In The First Ten Minutes
Van Nuys usually launches to the south, so the opening ninety seconds are over the Sepulveda Basin and the golf courses. The turn north comes quickly, and then the whole north slope is laid out in front of you.
The Santa Susana Mountains fill the windscreen — brown, steep, folded, with Oat Mountain as the high point on the skyline. Below them is the Porter Ranch ridge itself, and this is the part that startles residents: from three thousand feet you can read the terracing. The pads, the contour streets, the way the development stops in one clean line and the chaparral takes over. Porter Valley, the Vineyards, and the green fingers of Limekiln Canyon and Aliso Canyon cutting into the hills behind the houses.
Swing west and the Chatsworth Reservoir basin opens up, a wide dry bowl against the rocks that people have driven past for twenty years without ever seeing into. Turn back south and the entire Valley floor sits in one frame, flat to the Santa Monica Mountains, with the San Gabriels stacked up on the left.

Why Porter Ranch Trains At Van Nuys
The alternatives are worse and it is not close. Whiteman in Pacoima is a similar distance east but a far smaller field with a much shorter runway and a fraction of the instructor and maintenance capacity. Camarillo means the whole 101 corridor and the climb over the Conejo Grade. Burbank is an airline field, not a place you learn.
Van Nuys is the busiest general aviation airport in the region, with two parallel runways — the main one is 8,001 feet — and a full-time control tower. That last point is worth paying for: you talk to a controller on your very first lesson, which is uncomfortable for about three weeks and then permanently behind you.
