Roscoe Boulevard, End To End

The drive is almost absurdly simple. Roscoe Blvd runs east to west through Panorama City and ends up at the airport boundary. From the Van Nuys Blvd and Roscoe intersection to our door at Balboa is about three and a half miles of straight arterial road. Off-peak that is eight to twelve minutes. In the morning and evening peaks it stretches to fifteen or twenty, and the pinch points are the Sepulveda Blvd and Woodley Avenue signals rather than anything to do with a freeway.

From the northern end of the neighborhood near Nordhoff Street, take Woodman or Sepulveda south to Roscoe and you add about a mile. From the southern end near Victory Blvd, Victory west to Woodley then north on Woodley is a slightly shorter run and often quicker in the evening because it avoids the Roscoe and Sepulveda backup.

Nobody in Panorama City needs a freeway to get to a lesson. That is the single most useful fact on this page, because it means your training schedule does not depend on the 405 behaving itself.

If You Work Shifts, This Airport Is Built For You

Panorama City has a large shift-working population, and shift work is normally the enemy of flight training because most schools and most control towers keep office hours. Van Nuys does not. The tower operates 0600 to 2245 local, a seventeen-hour flying day, and we are open seven days a week from 9 AM to 9 PM.

That matters in three concrete ways. A night shift finishing at seven in the morning can fly an 0800 lesson into smooth, cool air and be home before the heat builds. A day shift finishing at four can fly a 6:30 PM lesson in summer. And the three hours of night flight training required for a private pilot certificate under 14 CFR 61.109, including a cross-country of more than 100 nautical miles and ten takeoffs and landings, can be flown on ordinary weeknights instead of being saved up for a block of leave.

Tell us your rota at the start and we will build the schedule around it. That is one of the genuine advantages of a Part 61 school: the syllabus flexes to fit your calendar, because it is not locked to a federally approved curriculum. It is also why we cannot issue I-20s, which matters only if you need a student visa.

Two Lessons A Week, And Why The Number Is Not Negotiable

The FAA minimum for a private pilot certificate is 40 hours of flight time under 14 CFR 61.109. Nationally, the real figure is closer to 60 or 70, and the variable that explains most of the gap is frequency. Fly twice a week and you keep what you learned. Fly twice a month and you spend the first twenty minutes of every lesson rebuilding it.

Put a number on it. Twenty wasted hours at $179 per hour for the airplane inside a package plus $110 per hour for the instructor is more than five thousand dollars, which is most of the difference between our Standard and Comprehensive private pilot courses. The drive from Panorama City is short enough that twice a week is genuinely achievable, so the only thing standing between you and the cheaper outcome is putting two fixed slots in the calendar and defending them.

Book them as three-hour blocks. A lesson is a briefing, a walkaround, the flight and a debrief while your instructor writes up your logbook. An hour in the air is roughly three hours at the airport, and four for a longer cross-country lesson. Planning for that from the start is the difference between training that fits your life and training that quietly stops.

What Van Nuys Gives You That A Quiet Field Cannot

Van Nuys is a Class D tower under the Los Angeles Class B shelf, with two parallel runways: 16R/34L at 8,001 feet and 16L/34R at 4,013 feet, at 802 feet of field elevation. Light trainers usually work the shorter runway while the business jets use the long one, so your first landings do not wait behind a departing jet.

Learning here means learning the radio properly, because there is no version of flying at Van Nuys that does not involve talking to a controller. Pilots trained at quiet uncontrolled fields tend to find Los Angeles airspace intimidating for a year afterwards. Pilots trained here find everywhere else easy. If you eventually want a commercial certificate and an airline job, that habit is worth more than any single feature of a training fleet.

The fleet is twenty airplanes across six types, from the two-seat Cessna 162 Skycatcher through the Piper Warrior, the Diamond DA20-C1, the Piper Arrow, the Piper Seminole twin and a Cirrus SR22 Turbo, plus a Redbird MCX full-motion simulator approved by the FAA as an advanced aviation training device. Depth matters for a practical reason: when an airplane goes in for maintenance, your lesson moves to another tail number rather than to next month. The whole list is on the airplanes you will fly.

What Panorama City Looks Like From Two Thousand Feet

A northbound departure off runway 34 turns you over the north Valley with Panorama City under the right wing inside two minutes. The grid is unmistakable from the air: Van Nuys Blvd running dead straight north, Roscoe crossing it, the wide blocks between Nordhoff and Victory, and the San Gabriel Mountains standing up behind Pacoima. On a clear winter morning after rain you can see the snow line on Mount Baldy from the downwind leg.

Turn west instead and you have the Santa Susana hills and open ground north-west of Chatsworth, which is where much of our airwork gets done because the terrain is easy to read and the airspace is quiet.
