The Drive From Pacoima To Van Nuys Airport

Whiteman Airport is at 12653 Osborne Street in Pacoima. From there to our door at 7900 Balboa Blvd is roughly nine to eleven miles by road, depending which way you go. There are two sensible routes and they behave very differently at different hours.

The surface route runs west on Osborne Street, south on Laurel Canyon Blvd, then west on Roscoe Blvd all the way to Balboa. It is about ten miles of arterial road with a lot of signals, and it takes eighteen to twenty-five minutes when the Valley is quiet. The freeway route takes the 5 south to the 118 west, then drops south on Balboa or Woodley. It is slightly longer in miles and usually faster outside peak, around sixteen to twenty-two minutes.

The honest version: between 7:00 and 9:00 in the morning and again from 4:00 to 7:00 in the evening, both routes slow down, and the 5 slows down more than Roscoe does. Budget thirty to forty-five minutes in those windows. If you live in Arleta or Sun Valley, subtract two or three miles. If you live north of the 210 in Lake View Terrace, add about four.

We are not going to pretend that is nothing. It is a real, repeated cost in your week, and the whole point of the sections below is to tell you what you get for it, so you can decide whether the trade is worth making for your own training.

What Whiteman Airport Actually Is

Whiteman is a Los Angeles County general aviation airport with one runway, 12/30, measuring 4,120 by 75 feet of asphalt, at a field elevation of about 1,003 feet. The control tower operates 0800 to 2000 local on 135.0, and the airport asks pilots to observe a voluntary curfew between 2200 and 0600. It is a Class D field, and it sits underneath the same Los Angeles Class B shelf that covers the whole Valley. Those figures come from the current FAA airport record.

It is a genuine, usable training airport with a flight school based on it. If you live within ten minutes of the gate, and your goal is a private pilot certificate flown in daylight at your own pace, Whiteman will do the job and the short drive is a real advantage. We would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise, because the school you can actually get to twice a week beats the school you admire from a distance.

The limits are structural rather than a criticism of anyone operating there. One runway means one traffic pattern, so when the pattern is busy your landing practice queues behind everybody else's. A 4,120-foot runway is plenty for a light trainer but leaves less margin on a hot afternoon at a field a thousand feet up. An eight-to-eight tower means the airport is not available for the early morning and later evening slots that make training fit around a job. And a smaller resident fleet means a maintenance week can pause your training rather than moving you to a different tail number.

Whiteman's long-term future has been debated publicly at Los Angeles County level for several years. Nothing has been decided, and we are not going to speculate about it here. We do mention it because if you are starting a two-year path towards a commercial certificate, the stability of your home field is a fair thing to think about. Our page on what the Santa Monica Airport closure means for flight training explains how a field closure actually affects a student mid-course.

What Changes When You Train At Van Nuys Instead

Van Nuys is also Class D under the Class B shelf, so the airspace lesson is similar in kind. Everything else is a matter of scale.

There are two parallel runways here, 16R/34L at 8,001 feet and 16L/34R at 4,013 feet. In practice that means the tower can run light trainers on the short runway while the jets use the long one, so your pattern work does not compete with a Gulfstream's departure. The tower operates 0600 to 2245, which is nearly seventeen hours a day. That is the single most underrated difference. It is what makes a 6:30 lesson before work possible, and it is what makes night flying for the 14 CFR 61.109 night requirement schedulable on a weeknight rather than saved for a special occasion.

Field elevation here is 802 feet, about two hundred feet lower than Whiteman. On a 95-degree August afternoon that difference is worth a couple of hundred feet of density altitude, which matters more to a loaded four-seat trainer than most students expect.

Fleet depth is the other practical difference. We operate twenty airplanes across six types, from the two-seat Cessna 162 Skycatcher through the Piper Warrior, the Diamond DA20-C1, the Piper Arrow, the Piper Seminole twin and a Cirrus SR22 Turbo, plus a Redbird MCX full-motion simulator that is an FAA-approved advanced aviation training device. When one airplane goes in for an inspection, your lesson moves to another one instead of moving to next week. The full list is on the airplanes you will fly.

How To Schedule It From The North-East Valley

Book in blocks, not in hours. A flight lesson is a pre-flight briefing, a walkaround, the flight itself, and a debrief with your instructor writing up your logbook. For a one-hour flight that is three hours at the airport, and for a longer cross-country lesson closer to four. Once you have accepted that, the drive stops being the deciding factor, because twenty extra minutes on a three-hour commitment is a rounding error.

The rhythm that works for people coming from Pacoima and Sun Valley is two fixed slots a week, one weekday early and one weekend morning. Take the 6:30 or 7:00 slot on the weekday: you drive against the traffic, the air is smooth, the pattern is quiet, and you are at your desk by ten. Take the earliest weekend slot you can stand, because summer heat builds after about eleven and turns the Valley bumpy.

Twice a week is not a sales line, it is arithmetic. The FAA minimum for a private pilot certificate is 40 hours under 14 CFR 61.109. Students flying twice a week typically finish in the mid-fifties to mid-sixties of hours. Students flying twice a month re-learn the last lesson at the start of every new one and often pass eighty. The gap between those two totals, at $179 per hour for the airplane inside a package plus $110 per hour for the instructor, is thousands of dollars. Our page on part-time flight training in Los Angeles sets out how people build the schedule around shift work.

What You Fly Over Leaving Van Nuys Toward The North-East Valley

A departure on runway 34 puts the Verdugo Mountains and the Angeles National Forest off your right shoulder within two minutes, and Whiteman itself becomes a small strip of pavement below you in about four. On a clear winter morning you can see Mount Wilson, the whole northern rim of the Valley and, from three thousand feet, the ocean at the far end of the 101. Turning west instead takes you over Chatsworth and the Santa Susana hills, which is where a great deal of our airwork gets done because the ground is open and the airspace is quiet.

None of that is why you should pick a flight school, but it is what the first lesson feels like, and it is the reason most people book a second one.

Flight School Near Whiteman Airport FAQ

Is There A Flight School At Whiteman Airport?

Yes. Whiteman Airport in Pacoima has a resident flight school and is a working general aviation field with a Class D tower. If a ten-minute drive is decisive for you, that is a legitimate reason to train there.

How Far Is Van Nuys Airport From Whiteman Airport?

About six miles in a straight line and roughly nine to eleven miles by road. Allow eighteen to twenty-five minutes off-peak by Osborne, Laurel Canyon and Roscoe, or thirty to forty-five minutes in morning and evening traffic.

What Is Whiteman Airport's Runway Length?

Runway 12/30 is 4,120 by 75 feet of asphalt at a field elevation of about 1,003 feet, according to the current FAA airport record. Van Nuys has two runways, 8,001 feet and 4,013 feet, at 802 feet elevation.

What Are Whiteman Airport's Tower Hours?

The Whiteman tower operates 0800 to 2000 local. The Van Nuys tower operates 0600 to 2245, which is why early-morning and evening lessons, including the night flying required by 14 CFR 61.109, are easier to schedule here.

Should I Train At Whiteman Or Van Nuys?

Train at Whiteman if the short drive is what makes you fly twice a week. Train at Van Nuys if you want two runways, a seventeen-hour tower day, twenty airplanes, a full-motion simulator and a path that continues through instrument, commercial and multi-engine on the same ramp.

Do I Need A Medical Certificate Before My First Lesson?

No. You need an FAA medical certificate before you fly solo, not before you start. Bring a government photo ID to a discovery flight and nothing else. Most students book the medical exam during their first month.

Can I Start At Whiteman And Move To Van Nuys Later?

Yes. Your logged hours belong to you, not to a school. Bring your logbook and we will fly a review lesson, tell you honestly where you stand against the private pilot standards, and pick up from there rather than starting you over.

How Much Is A Discovery Flight From Pacoima?

The same as from anywhere: $229 for sixty minutes, $299 for ninety, $399 for two hours. You fly it from the left seat with an instructor beside you, it is logged as dual instruction, and the full amount credits toward training if you enroll within twenty-four hours.

Come And Fly It Before You Decide

The cheapest way to settle the Whiteman-or-Van-Nuys question is to fly one lesson at each and see which ramp you want to come back to. Ours starts with a discovery flight at $229 for sixty minutes, flown from the left seat, logged as dual instruction, and credited in full toward a course if you enroll within twenty-four hours. If you would rather talk first, book a free consultation and we will go through your schedule, your budget and your timeline with no pressure. Call (818) 330-1318 any day between 9 AM and 9 PM.
