The 101, The 405, And Why You Should Book At Ten
Sherman Oaks has the misfortune of sitting on top of the 101/405 interchange, and any honest local page has to say so. Between roughly 7 and 9:30 in the morning and 4 and 7 in the evening, both freeways through Sherman Oaks are slower than the surface streets beside them, and a seven-mile trip can take thirty-five minutes.
The practical advice is simple: for a first flight, book a mid-morning or a mid-afternoon slot. Ten in the morning is the sweet spot — the marine layer has usually lifted, the interchange has cleared, the air has not yet gone bumpy with the afternoon heat, and the drive is fifteen minutes. The Santa Monica Mountains run along the south edge of your neighbourhood with Mulholland Drive on the crest, and Fryman Canyon and Coldwater Canyon Park drop back down toward you. Cross the ridge and the Westside opens up: Century City's towers, the Getty Center on its ridge above the Sepulveda Pass, and Santa Monica Bay filling the horizon.
