West Hollywood sits almost exactly halfway between two general aviation airports: Van Nuys, about 15 miles north over Laurel Canyon, and Santa Monica, about 12 miles southwest down La Cienega and the 10. You Fly LA trains at Van Nuys, at 7900 Balboa Blvd, and the reason we think that is the better base for a West Hollywood student is not distance at all. It is that Santa Monica Airport is scheduled to close on 31 December 2028.
That single date changes the arithmetic for anyone starting now. A private certificate takes most people six to twelve months; instrument, commercial and instructor ratings take years. If you begin at a field with a closure date, you are choosing to move schools partway through. This page lays out the choice honestly, then covers the drive. Getting Here From West Hollywood
Three routes, and which one you use depends entirely on the hour.
- Laurel Canyon Boulevard. North on Fairfax or Crescent Heights to Sunset, then Laurel Canyon over the crest into Studio City, north to Victory Boulevard, west to Balboa. About 15 miles, the shortest on the odometer, and the nicest drive.
- The 101 through the Cahuenga Pass. East on Sunset or Santa Monica Boulevard to Highland, north onto the 101, exit at Balboa Boulevard. Longer, but a freeway the whole way once you are on it.
- The 405 over the Sepulveda Pass. West on Santa Monica Boulevard to the 405 north, exit Roscoe, west to Balboa. About 16 to 17 miles. The worst of the three in the evening peak and the best of the three on a Sunday morning.

The Honest Version Of That Drive
Laurel Canyon is the shortest route and the most fragile one. It is a two-lane canyon road carrying commuter volume, and a single breakdown or a wet morning can add twenty minutes with no warning. The 101 through the Cahuenga Pass is the most reliable but is genuinely slow northbound between four and seven on a weekday. The 405 over the Sepulveda Pass is the one to avoid in that same evening window and the one to use at weekends.
Our practical advice to West Hollywood students is to pick a morning slot and stop thinking about it. Nine or ten o'clock on a weekday gets you here in under half an hour on any of the three routes and home in the same, because you are traveling against the commute both ways. If your schedule only opens up at six in the evening, take the 101, accept 50 minutes, and book a longer block so the drive buys more flying.
Booking Around An Irregular Schedule
A lot of our West Hollywood students work in production, and production does not respect a Tuesday-and-Thursday lesson plan. Two things help.
The first is that we are open 9 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week. That is twelve hours a day including both weekend days, which means a week with three free mornings and a week with one free Sunday can both be used.
The second is the block. Book three to four hours and fill it rather than booking single hours you will cancel. A block can be a 1.5-hour flight plus an hour in the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator, or two shorter flights with a break between, or a flight plus an hour of ground instruction. When you are away for three weeks on a shoot, the simulator is also how you come back without having lost everything, because a session in the box is far cheaper than re-flying the lesson you forgot.
The honest warning is the same one we give everyone: the single biggest predictor of how many hours your certificate takes is how often you fly. The legal minimum in 14 CFR 61.109 is 40 hours. Students who fly twice a week land nearer 50 to 60. Students who fly once a fortnight can pass 80. What Training Here Involves
Van Nuys is a Class D towered field with two parallel runways sitting directly under the Los Angeles Class B shelf. You learn to work with a busy tower and with Class B airspace from the first hours rather than bolting those skills on later. The fleet runs to about twenty airplanes: Cessna 162 Skycatchers and Piper Warriors for primary training, Diamond DA20-C1s, a Piper Arrow for the complex endorsement, a Piper Seminole for the multi-engine rating and a Cirrus SR22 Turbo for high-performance work. The Redbird MCX is an FAA-approved advanced aviation training device.
We are Part 61. We do not hold Part 141, we do not issue I-20s, and we do not accept GI Bill funding for a private pilot certificate. If any of those matter to you, say so on the first call and we will tell you straight away whether we are the wrong school.
