Flight School Near Hollywood

The nearest flight school to Hollywood is at Van Nuys Airport, about 13 to 16 miles over the hill depending on which route you take, and 25 to 45 minutes of driving. You Fly LA is at 7900 Balboa Blvd on the west side of the field, and the strange thing about training here if you live in Hollywood is that you will spend a good part of your first year flying back over your own neighborhood.

Hollywood has no airport of its own and never has. Every flight school that serves it sits on the other side of the Santa Monica Mountains at Van Nuys, or west at Santa Monica, or east at Burbank. Van Nuys is the closest of the three to most Hollywood postcodes and by a distance the largest general aviation field of them, which is why it is the default answer. Getting Here From Hollywood: Three Ways Over The Hill

Hollywood sits on the south side of the Santa Monica Mountains and Van Nuys sits on the north side, so every route is a question of which gap you use.

• The Cahuenga Pass, on the 101. North on the 101 through the pass, past Universal City, along the south Valley, exit at Balboa Boulevard or continue to the 405 and exit Roscoe. The most predictable route and the one to use with luggage or in the dark.
• Laurel Canyon Boulevard. North from Sunset over the crest, down into Studio City, then north on Laurel Canyon to Victory Boulevard and west to Balboa. The shortest on the odometer at roughly 13 miles, and the most pleasant drive of the three.
• Coldwater Canyon or Beverly Glen. Useful when the 101 is stopped and Laurel Canyon is backed up, which happens more often than either should.

The Honest Version Of That Drive

It is a short hop, but it is a short hop through one of the tightest pinch points in the city. The Cahuenga Pass northbound between roughly four and seven on a weekday is the stretch that turns a 25-minute drive into 50. Laurel Canyon has its own version of the same problem in the same hours, made worse by the fact that a single stalled car closes it.

The good news is that this is the one commute on our service-area list where the direction of travel works in your favor at both ends of the day. Hollywood to the Valley in the morning is against the flow, and the Valley back to Hollywood in the afternoon is against it too. Morning lessons are close to frictionless. If you need an evening slot, take Laurel Canyon up and the 101 home, or simply leave fifteen minutes earlier and accept it.

Three And Four Hour Blocks Still Work Better

Even at 14 miles, one-hour lessons waste your time, because the hour in the airplane is never the whole visit. A lesson is a preflight briefing, a walkaround, the flight, and a debrief. Book a block of three to four hours and you get far more out of the same trip.

• Flight plus simulator. An hour and a half in the airplane and an hour in the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator. Radio work, emergencies and instrument procedures are cheaper and infinitely more repeatable in the box.
• Flight plus ground. An hour of ground instruction after the debrief is where the written exam gets passed.
• Two flights in a morning. A 1.5-hour lesson, a break, then a shorter second flight. Two lessons, one drive.
• Twice a week. Four to five flight hours a week is the cadence that keeps the 40-hour minimum in 14 CFR 61.109 from becoming 70 real hours.

You Will Fly Over Hollywood On Your First Lesson

Departing Van Nuys and turning southeast puts you over the Hollywood Hills within a few minutes. The Hollywood Sign, the Bowl, Griffith Observatory, the Capitol Records building and the studio lots in Burbank and Studio City all sit inside the first ten minutes of a typical discovery flight, and the Downtown skyline is a few minutes beyond them. Two things are worth being precise about. First, these are discovery flights, which means instructional flights that you fly yourself from the left seat with a flight instructor beside you. They are not air tours and we do not operate under a 14 CFR 91.147 letter of authorization. Second, the reason the Hollywood Hills show up on every route is not scenery for its own sake. They are a useful teaching environment: the terrain gives you real practice at holding altitude over rising ground, and the Class B shelf above teaches you to read a chart properly from the first hour.

For a Hollywood resident that has a practical benefit most students do not get. Navigation exercises stop being abstract when the landmarks are streets you drive. Students who live under the route learn to hold a heading faster, because they can see when they are drifting without looking at the instruments.

The Airport Itself

Van Nuys is a Class D towered airport under the Los Angeles Class B shelf, with two parallel runways, 16R/34L at 8,001 feet and 16L/34R at 4,000 feet. The Los Angeles World Airports description of it as one of the world's busiest general aviation airports is not marketing; it is what the traffic count says. Learning to fly here means learning to talk to a busy tower from your first lesson rather than adding that skill later, which is exactly the skill that makes a new private pilot comfortable flying anywhere in the country.

What It Costs
