Twenty-Five Miles Of The 134, And An Alternate Worth Knowing
The 134 west is the default and it is close to a straight line: out of Pasadena, past the Colorado Street Bridge, through Glendale and Burbank along the north edge of Griffith Park, then onto the 101 westbound at the Ventura interchange and off at Balboa Blvd. North on Balboa for just under four miles and you are at the gate. Twenty-five miles, roughly thirty-three minutes when it is behaving, forty-five to sixty in the weekday evening.
The alternate is genuinely useful and most Pasadena residents have never used it. The 210 west to the 118 west, then south on Balboa Blvd runs along the top of the San Fernando Valley instead of through the middle of it. It is seven or eight miles longer, but it avoids both the 134 through Glendale and the 101 through Sherman Oaks — the two stretches that turn a thirty-three-minute drive into an hour. A Pasadena Discovery Flight Faces East
Everybody who books from Pasadena wants the same thing, and it is reasonable: to see their own side of the mountains from the air. Van Nuys is west of you, so the eastbound leg of the flight is the one that matters, and on a 60-minute flight there is time to do it properly.
The route follows the north face of the Santa Monica Mountains, and the first landmarks are the shared ones — the Hollywood Sign on Mount Lee and Griffith Observatory on the slope of Mount Hollywood, both approached from the north side. Past Griffith Park the Los Angeles River bends south through the Glendale Narrows, the Verdugo Mountains stand alone to the north-east, and downtown Los Angeles rises off the plain to the south.

Then your own geography arrives, and it is the best part of an eastbound flight from Van Nuys.
The Arroyo Seco is the organising feature: a deep green cut running south out of the mountains, with the Rose Bowl sitting in the widest part of it, ringed by the golf course and completely obvious from two thousand feet. The Colorado Street Bridge crosses the arroyo just south of it in a line of arches. Old Pasadena and the Colorado Blvd grid run east from there, with the tiled dome of Pasadena City Hall as the one building you will identify without help.
Behind all of it, the San Gabriel Mountains go straight up. From the ground they are a backdrop; from the air the scale changes completely — the canyons above Altadena, the switchbacks of the Angeles Crest Highway, and the antenna farm on the summit of Mount Wilson, which from Pasadena is a distant bump and from an aeroplane is a recognisable cluster of towers. JPL sits at the mouth of its own canyon on the La Cañada side, and the Huntington grounds in San Marino read as a block of formal gardens in the middle of a suburb.
