Airspace Classes Explained In One Page
US airspace classes run A, B, C, D, E and G — there is no Class F in the United States. Each class sets a different bar for who may enter, what equipment the aircraft must carry, whether you must talk to anyone first, and how much visibility and cloud clearance VFR requires. This page covers all six plus special use airspace.
We train inside one of the most layered airspace environments in the country. Class A Airspace
Class A begins at 18,000 feet MSL and runs through Flight Level 600 over the contiguous United States and 12 nautical miles offshore. There is no VFR in it: every flight is on an IFR clearance, flown by an instrument-rated pilot in an IFR-equipped aircraft, altimeters set to 29.92. A trainer will never see it, but it is part of why the instrument rating exists.
Class B Airspace
Class B surrounds the busiest airports in the country, drawn as a stack of shelves — the upside-down wedding cake — usually reaching about 10,000 feet MSL. Entry requires an actual clearance; two-way contact is not enough. Until a controller says "cleared into the Class Bravo," you stay outside.
Equipment reaches beyond the airspace itself: a 30-nautical-mile ring around the primary Class B airport — the Mode C veil — requires a transponder and ADS-B Out from the surface to 10,000 feet. Van Nuys sits inside the LAX veil, which is why every airplane on our ramp carries ADS-B Out though Class D alone does not demand it. A student pilot also needs training in that specific Class B plus an endorsement, and Appendix D to Part 91 names airports where solo student operations are prohibited outright. LAX is one.
Class C Airspace
Class C wraps airports with an operating tower and radar service that do not carry Class B volume. The standard shape is a surface area about five nautical miles across reaching roughly 4,000 feet above the airport, plus a shelf out to ten miles starting near 1,200 feet AGL.
Entry needs two-way radio communication established, which the FAA defines precisely: the controller must acknowledge you by call sign. "Cirrus 12A, standby" is established communication. "Aircraft calling, standby" is not. That matters ten miles west of Hollywood Burbank Airport (KBUR), the Class C we live next to — close enough that the legal description of the Van Nuys Class D carves it out. Students in our Burbank-area flight training learn to call SoCal Approach early rather than scrape the boundary.
What Is Class D Airspace
Class D surrounds towered airports that do not qualify as Class C or B. It runs from the surface to a charted ceiling, typically around 2,500 feet above the field, drawn with a dashed blue line and a bracketed number giving that ceiling in hundreds of feet MSL.
Van Nuys is the concrete case. The Class D extends from the surface to but not including 3,000 feet MSL within a 4.3-mile radius, excluding the Hollywood Burbank Class C and a 1.8-mile radius around Whiteman Airport. Field elevation is roughly 800 feet, so the column above the pattern is about 2,200 feet thick with two bites out of it.
Entry requires two-way radio communication established with the tower before you cross the boundary. Class D itself requires no transponder and no ADS-B. Speed matters too: at or below 2,500 feet AGL within four nautical miles of the primary airport of a Class C or D surface area, the limit is 200 knots indicated.
Two often-missed rules bite here. You may not take off, land or enter the traffic pattern in a Class B, C, D or E surface area unless ground visibility is at least 3 statute miles and the ceiling at least 1,000 feet, and you may not fly VFR beneath the ceiling in those surface areas when it is under 1,000 feet. Below that it is an IFR clearance or Special VFR — 1 statute mile, clear of clouds, only if you request it. Special VFR at night requires an instrument rating and an instrument-equipped aircraft, and Part 91 Appendix D lists airports where it is prohibited entirely. LAX is again on the list.
Class E Airspace
Class E is the rest of the controlled airspace — the connective tissue that lets IFR traffic get from the ground to the airways. Its floor changes with what sits underneath: the surface, 700 feet AGL, 1,200 feet AGL, or a charted MSL altitude. It tops out just below 18,000 feet MSL. VFR pilots need no clearance and no radio call; what changes is the weather requirement and, at and above 10,000 feet MSL but not within 2,500 feet of the ground, a Mode C transponder and ADS-B Out.
Class G Airspace
Class G is uncontrolled: no clearance, no radio, no equipment, no ATC separation. There is little of it in the Los Angeles Basin because Class E floors sit low almost everywhere — head north over the Antelope Valley and you will find it. The trade-off is the loosest VFR minimums in the system over some of the least forgiving terrain.

Two patterns make this stick. Three statute miles and 500-1,000-2,000 is the default nearly everywhere below 10,000 feet, with Class B the cloud-clearance exception because ATC separates everything inside it. Above 10,000 feet MSL it grows to 5 miles and 1,000-1,000-1 mile, because closing speeds are higher.

TFRs change week to week, and Southern California generates more than most regions: wildfire restrictions that stack firefighting aircraft into a small volume of sky, stadium restrictions, a standing restriction over the Disneyland resort, and presidential movement that can close a large piece of the basin for a day. The LAX Special Flight Rules Area
Los Angeles has something most cities do not: a published VFR corridor straight over an airline hub. The LAX Special Flight Rules Area lets a light aircraft cross above the LAX runways without a Class B clearance and without talking to a controller, under rules written into 14 CFR 93.95.
The rules are exact. The flight must be VFR and legal under 91.155(a). You track the Santa Monica VOR 132-degree radial — level at 3,500 feet MSL southeastbound, level at 4,500 feet MSL northwestbound. Squawk 1201 before entering and while inside. Indicated airspeed must not exceed 140 knots. Anti-collision and position lights on, landing lights recommended. Carry a current Los Angeles Terminal Area Chart. Turbojets are prohibited from VFR operations there. Pilots monitor and self-announce on 128.55 over landmarks such as Imperial Highway, the south runways and Ballona Creek.
Alongside it sit the Mini Route at 2,500 feet MSL and the Shoreline Route higher up, both of which do require a Class B clearance. Flying the SFRA the first time is a milestone: a few thousand feet above departing widebodies, separated by procedure rather than by a controller.
How To Read Airspace Chart Symbols
The Los Angeles sectional encodes all of this in color and line weight. Solid blue is Class B, solid magenta Class C, dashed blue Class D, dashed magenta a Class E surface area. A soft magenta band means Class E begins at 700 feet AGL; a soft blue band means 1,200 feet AGL. Numbers stacked in a box give ceiling over floor in hundreds of feet MSL — 100 over 50 is a shelf from 5,000 to 10,000 feet — while a Class D ceiling appears as a bracketed number. A thin blue circle 30 nautical miles from the primary Class B airport is the Mode C veil. Hatched boundaries mark special use airspace: blue for prohibited, restricted and warning, magenta for MOAs and alert areas.
What A Student At Van Nuys Meets In The First Ten Lessons
Lesson one starts inside Class D. You call ground before the airplane moves and talk to tower for takeoff. Students at quiet airports often do not touch a controller for weeks; here it happens before the wheels turn.
Within a few lessons you leave the Class D and climb into Class E toward the practice area, which means knowing where the LAX Class B shelf floors sit and holding an altitude that keeps you legally underneath. Get sloppy with altitude in this valley and you bust Bravo, so precision becomes a habit early instead of a checkride cram. Around the same point you start requesting flight following from SoCal Approach. By the time solo cross-countries arrive you are skirting the Burbank Class C, planning around active restricted areas to the north, checking wildfire TFRs, and eventually flying the SFRA over LAX.
