The commercial pilot salary figure in federal data is $123,220 — the median annual wage for the occupation BLS calls "commercial pilots", in wage data for May 2025. Half of those 47,630 people earned more, half earned less, and the published spread runs from $58,850 at the 10th percentile to $266,620 at the 90th.
Before you do anything with that number, understand what it counts, because this is the single most misread figure in aviation. "Commercial pilots" in the federal statistics is not a junior grade of airline pilot. It is a separate occupation covering unscheduled flying — charter, corporate, air ambulance, aerial tours, agricultural application, aerial survey and flight instruction. Airline flying is counted in a different occupation entirely. A pilot does not start in the commercial pilots row and graduate into the airline row; they are two populations, and a large number of people spend an entire satisfying career in the first one.

The caveat that belongs beside every figure here. Commercial pilot pay varies enormously by operator, by equipment, by role and by how long you have been there, and a published median hides all of it. The occupation-wide median is a summary of ten very different industries, which is why the next table matters more than this one.
Commercial Pilot Salary By Industry
The useful question is never "what does a commercial pilot earn". It is "what does a commercial pilot earn doing what". BLS publishes wage estimates for the occupation inside each industry, and the answer changes by more than $100,000 depending on the row.

Three things worth pulling out of that table. Nonscheduled air transportation is where most of these jobs are — 18,580 of them, more than the next three industries combined, and BLS separately reports that 38 percent of commercial pilots work in it. The low tails are real. Four industries have a 10th percentile under $50,000, which is what a genuinely entry-level flying job pays. And the ceilings are much higher than the medians suggest: the 90th percentile in charter flying is $299,300, well above the occupation's own median, because "nonscheduled air transportation" contains both a single-pilot piston air taxi and a long-range corporate jet operation.
The Certificate Is Not The Occupation
An FAA Commercial Pilot certificate and the BLS "commercial pilots" occupation are different things that share a name, and conflating them is how people end up with a wrong picture of the career.
The certificate is a licence to be paid to fly. Every professional pilot has one, including every airline pilot, because the airline transport pilot certificate is built on top of it. The occupation is a statistical category for people whose job is unscheduled flying. So the 118,314 active airplane commercial pilot certificates the FAA counted at the end of 2025 are not 118,314 people in the commercial pilots wage table — a great many of them are airline pilots, are flying privately, or are not flying for a living at all.

The practical consequence: earning the certificate is a well-defined, purchasable, schedulable project with a published price. Getting one of the 47,630 jobs is a separate problem with its own timeline, and the wage table describes only people who already solved it. What The Commercial Certificate Actually Permits
BLS describes commercial pilots as involved in unscheduled flight activities such as aerial application, charter flights and aerial tours, with additional non-flight duties — some schedule flights, arrange maintenance, and load luggage themselves; those who transport company executives are known as corporate pilots. It also notes a limit worth knowing before you plan a career around the certificate alone: commercial pilots must hold an instrument rating if they want to carry passengers for pay more than 50 miles from the point of origin of their flight, or at night. California is second only to Florida for commercial pilot employment and carries a much higher median, $165,590 against the national $123,220. The 90th percentile of $500,170 is the highest in any state and reflects the concentration of large-cabin corporate and charter operations in the state rather than better pay for the same work.
