Housing And Transport For Out-Of-Town Flight Students

You Fly LA does not run student accommodation, and we are not going to pretend that a flight school dormitory exists here. What we can do is tell you honestly how long each course keeps you in Los Angeles, which parts of the San Fernando Valley put you within a sensible drive of Van Nuys Airport, and how students get to the ramp every day without a car.

Step One: Work Out How Long You Are Actually Staying

This is the decision everything else follows from, and most people get it wrong by underestimating. A seven-day course is a hotel problem. A six-week course is a short-term rental problem. A nine-month career program is a lease problem, and a completely different budget.

Add a margin. Weather, maintenance, examiner availability and the pace you personally learn at all move the finish date, and an accelerated course that slips by a week is normal rather than a failure. Book accommodation you can extend.

Where To Look, By Drive Time

We are at 7900 Balboa Blvd, on the Balboa Boulevard side of Van Nuys Airport. The useful search radius is the central and western San Fernando Valley. In rough order of how long it takes to reach us outside the worst of the traffic:

• Van Nuys and Lake Balboa. The immediate neighborhood. Walking or cycling distance from parts of it, and the cheapest way to remove commuting from the equation entirely.
• Encino, Reseda, Northridge and Sherman Oaks. Ten to twenty minutes in normal conditions, a much larger rental market, and the Ventura Boulevard corridor for food and groceries.
• North Hollywood and Studio City. Twenty to thirty minutes, and the useful one if you want Metro access to the rest of Los Angeles on your days off.
• Woodland Hills, Canoga Park and Winnetka. Twenty to thirty minutes west, generally quieter and often cheaper.
• Over the hill, in Hollywood or on the Westside. Possible, and a mistake. A canyon commute twice a day in Los Angeles traffic will cost you more flying hours than it saves in rent.

Treat every drive time as a best case. Los Angeles traffic is not a rumor, and a lesson that starts at 8:00 AM means leaving earlier than the map suggests.

Hotels Near The Airport

For a course of a week or two, a hotel is usually the right answer, and there are hotels both adjacent to Van Nuys Airport and along the Sepulveda Boulevard and Ventura Boulevard corridors a short drive away. Two things are worth doing before you book. Ask for a weekly rate rather than accepting the nightly one, because many properties will quote one if asked and few will volunteer it. And check whether breakfast and parking are included, because in Los Angeles parking is frequently charged separately and adds up over a fortnight.

Short-Term Rentals And Monthly Furnished Lets

For four weeks and up, a furnished rental is usually cheaper and far more comfortable than a hotel, and having a kitchen changes your food budget completely. One local rule is worth knowing: in the City of Los Angeles, short-term rentals of fewer than 30 days fall under the city's home-sharing rules and the host is required to be registered. A stay of 30 days or more sits outside that regime, which is one reason monthly lets are easier to find than three-week ones. Confirm the position for the specific address you are booking rather than relying on a listing's description.

Ask any landlord or host three questions before paying: is there reliable internet for ground study and written test preparation, is parking included, and can the stay be extended by a week or two if training runs long. The third one matters more than people expect.

Getting To The Airport Every Day

Which Airport To Fly Into

Hollywood Burbank, KBUR, is about 11 miles east of us and is the easiest arrival if the fares work. Los Angeles International is the other obvious option, and the Van Nuys FlyAway coach runs between LAX and a terminal on Woodley Avenue in Van Nuys, which puts you a short ride from the field without crossing the city in traffic. Van Nuys itself is a general aviation airport, so unless you are arriving in a light aircraft you will not be landing here.

Living In The Valley While You Train

An accelerated course is more physically demanding than people expect. You are flying five or six days a week, often with two sessions in a day, and the studying happens in the evening when you are already tired. A few things make that easier, and they are worth factoring into where you stay.

Air conditioning is not a luxury in the San Fernando Valley. Summer here is hot, often well above what a visitor from a temperate country is braced for, and sleeping badly for six weeks will cost you flying hours. A kitchen matters for the same reason: eating properly on a schedule that starts early is much harder from a hotel room. Somewhere quiet to spread out charts, a tablet and a notebook matters more than square footage. And somewhere to exercise, even just a route you can run or cycle, is the thing most out-of-town students say afterwards that they wish they had sorted out on day one rather than week four.

Plan your rest days as deliberately as your flying days. Two consecutive lessons after a poor night's sleep is not training, it is paying for repetition you will not retain.

If You Are Coming From Outside The United States

The order of operations matters more than the accommodation does. The TSA Alien Flight Student Program clearance has to be in hand before flight training toward a certificate begins, and once approved you must begin training within 180 days and complete the approved training within 365 days of the approval. Discovery flights are exempt from the clearance, but a course is not. Start that process before you book flights or sign anything, not after.

Two further practicalities. We train under Part 61 and do not issue I-20 forms, so we cannot sponsor an M-1 vocational student visa; our international student pilots page sets out what that means and which routes remain open. And if you intend to drive here, sort out the license question before you arrive, because a car is the default way to move around the Valley and rental companies have their own documentation requirements on top of whatever the law asks for.

What To Budget For Besides Rent

Accommodation is not the only line item that surprises out-of-town students. Set money aside for the FAA knowledge test, which takes about two hours and costs roughly $175 at a PSI testing center, and for the examiner's fee for your practical test, which in Southern California generally runs in the region of $800 to $1,000 and is paid directly to the examiner. Budget for a headset if you do not own one, for a car and its insurance, and for the simple fact that a course which runs long costs both more rent and more flying. A Checklist Before You Arrive

• Confirm your course start date with us in writing, and book accommodation you can extend by two weeks.
• If you are not a US citizen, start the TSA clearance before you book flights. Discovery flights are exempt; training is not.
• Book your FAA medical examination early if your course requires solo flight.
• Arrange transport from the airport for the day you land, and a way to reach the field on day one.
• Bring photo identification, your logbook if you have one, and any previous training records.

Yes, if you stay close. Metro's G Line busway crosses the Valley with stops on Van Nuys Boulevard and Sepulveda Boulevard, cycling works well in the flat Valley streets, and rideshare covers the gaps. Over a long course a car is usually cheaper.

Which Airport Should I Fly Into?
