How To Overcome Fear Of Flying: A Pilot's Method

You overcome a fear of flying by replacing guesswork with explanation and avoidance with graded exposure, in that order. The method below is the one a flight instructor would use: work out which of the three underlying fears you actually have, learn precisely what the aircraft is doing and why, then go towards flying in steps small enough that you finish every one of them.

Read this one if you want a plan. One caveat before you start: we are flight instructors, not clinicians. If your fear involves panic attacks or is severe enough to be shaping your life, do this alongside a licensed mental health professional rather than instead of one.

Step One: Work Out Which Fear You Have

Almost everyone starts by trying to fix the wrong thing. Before you do anything else, ask yourself which of these three sentences is closest to true.

  • "I hate not being in control." You are fine driving, fine on a motorcycle, fine on a ladder. What you cannot stand is handing your safety to a stranger behind a locked door. This is the most common version by a long way, and it is the one that responds fastest to actually flying an aircraft yourself.
  • "I think the airplane is going to break." Turbulence terrifies you. You watch the wing flex. You are waiting for the engine noise to change. This one is fixed almost entirely by accurate information, because the answers are unusually clean and the things you are afraid of are not what causes accidents.
  • "I cannot stand being trapped." The cabin door closing is the moment. You would be fine if you could get off. This is closer to claustrophobia or panic than to aviation, and aviation facts alone will not shift it. It needs the same graded exposure plus, usually, professional help with the panic itself.

Most people are a blend, with one dominant. Write down which is dominant, because every later step gets aimed at it. A person whose fear is about control should spend their money on holding a yoke. A person whose fear is about the machine should spend it on a long ground briefing first. Getting this backwards is why so many nervous flyers try something once, find it did not help, and conclude nothing will.

Step Two: Learn What The Aircraft Is Actually Doing

Fear fills gaps. If you do not know what a noise means, your brain supplies a meaning, and under stress the meaning it supplies is always a threat. The fastest single improvement available to a nervous flyer is to close those gaps, because an explained event stops being evidence and becomes a detail.

Turbulence Is Roughness, Not Damage

Turbulence is air that is not moving smoothly: thermals rising off heated ground, wind spilling over mountains, shear near the jet stream, the wake of an aircraft ahead. It is weather in the way a choppy sea is weather. A boat in a swell is not in the process of sinking, and a wing in turbulence is not in the process of breaking.

The number to hold on to is the certification standard. A transport category airplane must be designed for a positive limit maneuvering load factor of at least 2.5g under 14 CFR 25.337, and 14 CFR 25.303 then requires a factor of safety of 1.5 to be applied on top of that limit load before the structure is permitted to fail. Turbulence in normal airline operations sits well inside the limit figure. The wing you are watching flex is doing exactly what it was built to do; a wing rigid enough not to move would have to be far heavier and would transmit every bump straight to you.

The practical consequence: the injuries turbulence causes happen to people who are not wearing a seatbelt. Keep it loosely fastened whenever you are seated. That single habit also removes the sensation your body reacts to most strongly, which is the feeling of being lifted out of the seat.

One more thing that helps more than it should: the drop you feel is rarely the drop you imagine. A jolt that feels like a hundred feet is usually a handful. The sensation is produced by how fast the vertical acceleration changes, not by distance traveled.

Run through this before your next flight and you will spend the first ten minutes recognizing things instead of interpreting them.

A Go-Around Is A Success, Not A Failure

If an approach is not stable, or the runway is not yet clear, or the wind has shifted, the crew applies full power and climbs away to try again. It feels alarming because it is sudden and because nobody warned you. It is in fact one of the most practiced maneuvers in aviation, briefed before every single approach and demonstrated in the simulator twice a year by every airline pilot. A go-around is the system working precisely as designed. Student pilots at Van Nuys fly them in their first few lessons.

If An Engine Stops, The Airplane Does Not

This is the fear nobody says out loud. Here is the answer. A multi-engine transport aircraft is certificated to lose an engine at the worst possible moment in the takeoff run and still climb away safely on the remaining engine; crews prove they can fly that exact scenario in recurrent checks. A single-engine training aircraft with the engine at idle is a glider. It does not fall. It descends at a shallow angle at a known speed, and gliding to a chosen field is one of the first emergency procedures any student learns and then practices repeatedly before ever flying alone. The Three Other Things People Quietly Worry About

Lightning strikes aircraft and has done for as long as there have been aircraft. Airframes are bonded so that the current travels through the structure and exits from static wicks on the trailing edges, nowhere near the systems that keep the airplane flying, and aircraft are tested for it as a condition of certification. It is loud and it is a non-event.

Bird strikes are common and overwhelmingly minor. Engines are certificated by having birds fired into them at speed, windshields are tested the same way, and the overwhelming majority of strikes produce a maintenance inspection rather than an emergency.

Cabin pressurization feels precarious because it is invisible, but the system is monitored continuously, has redundant outflow control, and drops masks automatically long before the cabin altitude becomes a problem. The pre-flight safety demonstration exists because the equipment works, not because it is expected to be needed.

Step Three: Build A Ladder, Then Climb It

Graded exposure is the part that actually changes the fear, and the reason it works is that anxiety, left alone and paid attention to, falls by itself. Escaping at the peak teaches your brain that escape was what saved you. Staying until it drops teaches it that nothing needed saving.

The rungs have to be small enough to complete. A ladder that goes straight from "I avoid airports" to "book a transatlantic flight" is not a ladder. Here is the one we use, and the point of each rung is to be finished, not survived.

Two rules make the ladder work. First, do not skip a rung because you feel brave on a good day. Second, do not repeat a rung more than two or three times; comfort on rung three is not progress towards rung five, and endless rehearsal becomes its own form of avoidance.

Step Four: Fly The Aircraft Yourself

The step that surprises people is the effective one. If your fear is about control, then one hour with your own hands on the controls does something that no amount of reading can: it replaces a belief with an experience.

What you learn in that hour, in roughly this order, is that an aircraft in flight is stable and wants to keep flying straight and level; that letting go of the yoke does not produce a dive; that 20 degrees of bank, which looks alarming through an airliner window, is barely anything; that the controls are light and the responses are gentle; that air traffic control is a conversation rather than a mystery; and that the instructor beside you is entirely unbothered by all of it. Every one of those is a direct contradiction of something the fear told you.

You do not have to take the controls. You can fly the whole hour in the right seat and watch. But taking them tends to help more, which is exactly what you would predict if the fear is about control in the first place. Step Five: Change What You Do On The Day

Small logistical choices change the difficulty of a flight more than most people expect.

  • Fly early. In Los Angeles the air is smoothest in the first hours after sunrise, before the ground heats and thermals start. This is true for light aircraft and broadly true for departures generally. We put nervous flyers in morning slots by default.
  • Sit over the wing. Not for safety reasons, which are a myth, but because it is the part of the aircraft closest to the center of rotation and therefore the smoothest.
  • Tell somebody. Tell the person booking you, tell your instructor, tell the cabin crew. It changes how you are treated and it breaks the secrecy that fear feeds on. If you tell our office you are a nervous flyer, it goes on the booking and changes who you fly with.
  • Arrive early and unhurried. Stress stacks. Running for a gate puts you in the seat already activated.
  • Eat something light and drink water. Low blood sugar and dehydration both produce sensations your brain will read as fear.
  • Skip the alcohol. It flattens the first hour and worsens the rest, and it keeps the avoidance loop intact.

What To Do In The Moment

When anxiety spikes in flight, the goal is not to feel calm. The goal is to stop treating the sensations as evidence. A few things genuinely help.

Slow the out-breath. Breathe in for a count of four, out for a count of six or seven. A longer exhale than inhale shifts the balance of your nervous system towards the calming side. Do not take deep fast breaths, which makes it worse.

Name what is happening. "That was the flaps." "That is thermal turbulence over the Valley." "My heart rate is up because I am frightened, not because anything is wrong." Labeling reduces the intensity of the response, and it is the reason the sounds table above is worth memorizing.

Ground yourself physically. Feet flat on the floor, push down. Hold something textured. Cold water on the wrists. These pull attention out of the internal catastrophe loop.

Let the wave pass. Anxiety peaks and then falls, usually within a few minutes, if you do not feed it. Your job is to do nothing while that happens rather than to make it stop.

Why This Works

It is worth understanding the mechanism, because it tells you what to do when a step feels pointless. Exposure does not work by proving to you that flying is safe. You almost certainly already believe that intellectually, which is why statistics alone have never helped you. It works by giving the older, faster, non-verbal part of your brain something it will accept as evidence, which is direct experience of the feared situation ending without the feared outcome.

That is why the details of the ladder matter so much. The exposure has to be long enough for the anxiety to fall while you are still in the situation, or the brain files the ending under escape. It has to be attended to, because a flight you slept through teaches nothing. It should be varied rather than identical each time, because your brain learns the specific situation rather than the general case. And it should include the things you would normally do to feel safe, gradually removed, because gripping the armrest for four hours and landing safely teaches you that the armrest worked.

Keep The Gap Between Flights Short

The most common way people lose ground is time. Somebody works up to a good flight, feels enormously better, and then does not fly again for two years. The fear quietly rebuilds in the gap, because nothing has contradicted it in the meantime, and the next flight starts nearly from scratch.

The fix is unglamorous: schedule the next one before the effect wears off. If you have done a simulator session, book the flight within a few weeks rather than thinking about it. If you have flown a discovery flight and it went well, the cheapest way to consolidate the gain is to do something in an aircraft again soon, whether that is another lesson, a flight with a friend, or a short trip you would previously have driven. Frequency does more for a fear of flying than intensity does.

Mistakes That Keep People Stuck

  • Fixing the wrong fear. Reading about aerodynamics when your problem is claustrophobia.
  • Distraction as a strategy. Sleeping through flights works once and makes the next one harder, because the fear is never disconfirmed.
  • Reading accident reports. A steady diet of the rarest events in aviation is an excellent way to convince yourself they are common.
  • Going too big too soon. One heroic flight that goes badly can set you back a year. Ladders exist for a reason.
  • Waiting to feel ready. Readiness follows action here rather than preceding it. The confidence arrives after the rung, not before it.
  • Doing it alone when it is severe. If you have panic attacks, get professional help with the panic as well. Exposure and treatment work far better together than either does alone.
