The High-Performance Endorsement And Flying A Turbo
Under 14 CFR 61.31(f), a high-performance airplane is one with an engine of more than 200 horsepower, and no person may act as pilot in command of one unless they have received and logged ground and flight training from an authorized instructor in a high-performance airplane, or a representative simulator or training device, been found proficient in its operation and systems, and received a one-time logbook endorsement. At 310 horsepower the SR22 Turbo is comfortably inside that definition. As with the complex endorsement, the rule sets no minimum hours, which is why we price the training at a fixed $1,799 instead of running a meter.
Turbocharging is the part that surprises pilots moving up. A normally aspirated engine loses power with altitude and tells you so; a turbocharged one holds manifold pressure into the flight levels, which means the airplane will happily climb to where the pilot needs oxygen and the weather is a different problem. Power management, cooling, and knowing when the turbocharger is working hardest are the substance of the ground portion, alongside the Perspective avionics and the CAPS decision-making that Cirrus training is built around.
CAPS is a whole-airframe parachute, and the training around it is less about pulling the handle than about knowing in advance the situations in which you would. Checking Out To Fly N422SN
You need the 14 CFR 61.31(f) high-performance endorsement before you may act as pilot in command of this airplane. Beyond that, a pilot certificate with the appropriate privileges, a current FAA medical certificate or BasicMed qualification, and a flight review completed since the beginning of the 24th calendar month before the month of the flight, under 14 CFR 61.56.
