How To Describe What We Do

Two points are worth getting right, because they are usually reported wrongly.

We are a flight school, not an air tour operator. A discovery flight is an instructional flight: the customer sits in the left seat and flies the aircraft with a certificated flight instructor beside them, and the hour is logged toward a pilot certificate. It is not a sightseeing ride under a Part 91.147 letter of authorization, and we do not sell one.

We train under Part 61, not Part 141. The certificate standards, the Airman Certification Standards and the checkride are identical; what differs is the school-level FAA certificate and the approved syllabus structure. We say so plainly on our Part 61 versus Part 141 page, including the consequence that we cannot take GI Bill benefits.

Imagery, Filming And Interviews

We hold our own photography of the fleet, the hangar, the simulator and instruction in progress, and we can usually supply stills for editorial use on request. Ask by phone or through the contact page and tell us the publication, the story and the deadline.

Filming on the airport is subject to LAWA and airport operator requirements as well as ours, so allow lead time. Air-to-air work, drone operations and anything involving passengers in the aircraft need to be scoped before a date is set. The practical constraints on filming and photography during flights are set out on our groups and events page.

Interviews can be arranged with instructors and with our founder and chief flight instructor. We will not supply student contact details; if a story needs a student voice, we will ask students on your behalf and pass on those who agree.

What We Will Not Provide

• Aggregate review scores or ratings. Where reviews are quoted anywhere, read our reviews page for the current position.
• Instructor flight hours, certificate numbers or employment histories beyond the certificates held.
• Student names, contact details or training records.
• Comment on incidents or operations involving other operators at Van Nuys.

Can I Get Photographs Of The Aircraft Or Instruction?

Can We Film At The Airport?

Filming is subject to LAWA and airport operator requirements as well as ours, so allow lead time. Air-to-air work, drone operations and filming with passengers on board need to be scoped before a date is agreed.

Are You An Air Tour Company?

No. We sell instructional discovery flights: the customer flies the aircraft from the left seat with a certificated flight instructor and the time is logged toward a pilot certificate. We do not operate sightseeing air tours.

Is You Fly LA Part 141?

No, we train under Part 61. The certificate standards and the checkride are the same; the difference is the school-level FAA certificate and the approved syllabus structure, and it is why we cannot take GI Bill benefits.

Can I Interview A Student?

We will not release student details, but we will ask students on your behalf and put you in touch with anyone who agrees.
