Southwest Airlines pilots are paid from a trip-for-pay structure rather than the straight credit-hour grid used at the legacy carriers, which is why Southwest rates look different from everyone else's and cannot be compared directly without adjustment. On the contract ratified on 22 January 2024, a first-year first officer was reported at about $133.76 per hour and a top-of-scale captain at $364.52, with four scheduled increases since.

Southwest Pilot Pay Rates, With Sources

Those are 2024 figures. The contract contains scheduled increases that have since been applied, so read them as a floor rather than as the current rate.

The 2024 Contract And Its Scheduled Increases

Southwest's pilots are represented by the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association. One Mile at a Time reported on 22 January 2024 that the agreement was ratified that day, runs five years through the end of 2028, and delivers approximately 50 percent in total increases made up of an immediate 29.15 percent followed by 4 percent in 2025, 4 percent in 2026, 4 percent in 2027 and 3.25 percent in 2028.

Why Southwest Rates Do Not Compare Directly

Southwest historically pays on trips rather than on credit hours, which changes what a published number means. One Mile at a Time noted on 22 January 2024 that Southwest's trip-for-pay values need to be multiplied by 1.149 to arrive at an equivalent hourly pay rate. Put a Southwest trip rate side by side with a legacy carrier's credit-hour rate without that adjustment and you will reach the wrong conclusion.

There is a second structural difference. Southwest operates a single aircraft family, the Boeing 737. At United, Delta and American the pay grid has a third axis for aircraft category, and a wide-body captain earns roughly $95 an hour more than a narrow-body captain in the same year of service. Southwest has no equivalent step, so a Southwest captain reaches the top of the available scale sooner and stays there. Whether that is better depends entirely on whether you would ever have held a wide-body seat at the other carrier, which is a seniority question.

How Southwest Compares With The Legacy Carriers

Southwest's first-year figure sits at the top of that list even before the 2025 and 2026 increases, which is one reason the carrier has been attractive to pilots leaving regionals. What The Federal Wage Data Says

Outside any one carrier, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of $232,140 for airline pilots, copilots and flight engineers in May 2025 wage data, with the 10th percentile at $106,710 and the 90th at $463,830. Southwest hires pilots who already hold an airline transport pilot certificate, which requires 1,500 hours of total time under 14 CFR 61.159, including 500 hours cross-country, 100 hours night and 75 hours instrument time.
