Flying is one of the most challenging activities you’ll ever experience, and that’s what makes it so rewarding. For many of us, flying has been a dream since we were children. Others see it as a fun hobby to add a new dimension to their life. Becoming a pilot gives you a new sense of adventure and freedom, an alternative to airline travel and long trips by car, and a fantastic way to leave the day’s stress behind you. It’s easier than you think to start your journey towards being a pilot, and we look forward to showing you how. Primary flight training in single-engine aircraft is the first step that most pilots make. If you want to fly for fun or fly for a living, this is where it all starts. Early in your training we will match you to the instructor best suited to your style of learning. Your instructor will work with you to accommodate your schedule and will give you feedback and encouragement as you progress toward becoming a licensed pilot. Learn to fly in Los Angeles with Encore Flight Academy.

Flying is freedom – the freedom to go where you want, when you want. How does flying up to Lake Tahoe to go skiing sound? A weekend in Las Vegas without the hassle of the airlines? Lunch with friends in Palm Springs? A flight to Catalina for a world-famous Buffalo Burger? A romantic dinner in San Diego? Or just jumping in the plane and flying simply for the fun of being aloft? These are just a few of the countless adventures waiting to be discovered for any pilot flying out of Van Nuys.

Van Nuys Airport is a designated Class “D” (control tower) airport by the Federal Aviation Administration. It is located just adjacent to Burbank Airport with Class “C” radar service, and within a short distance to world famous Los Angeles International Airport. This complexity of airspaces and excellent year round weather gives Encore Flight Academy the opportunity to provide a level of flight instruction unmatched anywhere else in the world.

Among other reasons, ideal flight conditions have made Van Nuys Airport the number one choice for Flight Training. There are 758 aircraft based at Van Nuys Airport, including 128 jets, 27 turboprop jets, 531 piston aircraft, and 52 helicopters. Van Nuys Airport is ranked as one of the busiest general aviation airports in the United States with 400,000 operations annually. That adds up to 1,100 takeoffs and landings daily to make Van Nuys Airport the busiest General Aviation Airport in the world.

We highly recommend Essence Flight Academy at Van Nuys Airport as a Premier Flight School in Los Angeles

Learning to fly can be on of life’s most rewarding accomplishments. The freedom of movement in a three dimensional state is not only fun but can lead to some interesting travel options and possibly a career opportunity.

The process starts by selecting a flight school, preferably one with full time
flight instructors and company owned airplanes. Possibly not having done this before or familiar with the flight training process, selecting the right school for you can be a formidable challenge. In order to figure out which flight school is best for you, start by developing a check list which has some of these questions:

  • Does the school have more than one training airplane of the same type?
  • Are these Aircraft company owned and not leasebacks?
  • Does the flight school utilizes FAA Approved Flight Simulators?
  • Are the flight instructors full time and on staff?
  • Has the operation been in business at least 10 years?
  • Does the school have it’s own on-site aircraft Maintenance Facility?
  • The option of FAR Part 141 approved school training?
  • Modern air-conditioned Spacious Facility with multiple ground school rooms?
  • Is there computerize Scheduling software with the student access?
  • Plenty of parking and easy access to the school?

If you’re selection process is narrowing down to a few flight training operations and one in particular can answer yes to most of the above, you should next consider scheduling a “first flight lesson” to confirm this is where you are going spend the next 40 hours in the air for that Private Pilot Certificate. Choosing the right flight school can be a very daunting task if you are not familiar with the industry and don’t know what to look for.  We have done our best to make this selection process as easy as possible for you, by pointing out different important factors, explaining them, and comparing our school to its competitors across Los Angeles.

One of the most important factors in choosing a flight school is the size of the Fleet (the number of aircraft) that the school operates.  This is important because, at any given time, at least 20% of the aircraft that a school operates will not be available for your use due to any number of required maintenance or repairs.  This unavailability of aircraft will result in your inability to reserve your training on the day and time that best fits YOUR schedule.  Additionally, the delays can add up to a significant delay in your overall training progress and completion date.

Additionally, a school with a variety of different aircraft makes and models will enhance your training because you will have the option of flying different aircraft, making you a more experienced, more confident and an overall better pilot.

And we have done the work for you in that area!  On the left, you see a chart that compares the cost per hour for Aircraft at Encore Flight v. other flight schools across the Los Angeles area.  Similarly, on the right, you see a comparison chart that compares the cost per hour for instructors.  When you rent an aircraft with an instructor (which you need), Encore Flight is undeniably one of the cheapest, if not the cheapest, option out there.  How do we do that?  We are able to offer low prices without sacrificing quality because we are the largest flight school at Van Nuys Airport, and one of the largest, if not the largest, in the entire Los Angeles area.  Due to our number of students and aircraft, we are able to get volume discount on everything from fuel to maintenance part.  Few other schools can make such a claim.

We flew so close to the Hollywood sign it was crazy. Then right down the center of Dodgers Stadium, downtown LA, Santa Monica, Marina Del Rey, and Malibu. He also pointed out all of the cool houses such as Mel Gibsons (no he wasn't beating anyone outside). He also had me fly over some mountains so I could see how turbulence affected the plane. Pretty sweet stuff. He landed, and I got the steer the plane down the runway. He didn't try to push any lessons on us or anything. Great sense of humor and just a nice dude. All 20-something of him. Couldn't have asked for a better guide.

Alex is absolutely amazing! Highly recommended. They have really great airplanes, and flight simulators. I have been a customer my here for while now and I have nothing but good things to say about them. I signed up for the private pilot course, I got the full package, it came with all the books and the reading materials. I think I have total of 50 hours of flight time in my program. They have excellent customer service, place give them a visit and ask for Alex, he will give you a your and really take care of you.

This is my first review on yelp, but I had such an amazing flight, I just had to write a review. If you want the best pilot, ask for Andre Malloy. I've always dreamed of flying a plane, and Andre is the best pilot and teacher anyone could ask for. He made me and my girlfriend feel safe, comfortable, and confident. His knowledge of flight is impeccable. He was in the Air Force, and it shows. I'm now on my way to getting my pilots license, and I can't wait for my next flight with Andre!

Andre, our Captain, was awesome! He guided us through our flight over L.A. He was quick to ease any anxiety and make it a comfortable, safe, fun and informative experience. 5 stars all the way. Great customer service, great experience, definitely a must do in L.A. After flying all around the world in commercial planes this was the first time I actually felt I was "flying". Cannot wait to do it again!

I took my wife on a one-hour sightseeing flight for her birthday and it was fantastic! We took off from Van Nuys, flew past the Hollywood sign and the Griffith Observatory, past Dodger Stadium, and then west over the Santa Monica pier and Point Dume to watch the sun sink below the horizon. The pilot, Kyle, was very friendly and a great guide, too, and the plane was comfortable.

My boyfriend has been taking flying lessons at Encore Flight School and he absolutely loves their program; he is almost done with completing the course to get his license. Last month , my boyfriend flew us to Catalina Island with Alex's ( the instructor) supervision and it was one of the best experiences I have ever had . FYI , I am absolutely terrified of flying and I would refuse traveling because I am so scared of heights and flying ; however , I couldn't believe how comfortable and safe I felt during the flight . Alex , the instructor , appeared very experienced . He is so knowledgable and he makes you feel very comfortable . A true professional ... If you are looking for taking flying lessons whether for pleasure or possibly as a career , I would HIGHLY recommend Encore Flight School . They have very reasonable prices for different packages ; They definitely would exceed your expectations.

Had my very first flight class today.  My girlfriend surprised me my birthday.  I was literally blindfolded and driven to the location - totally clueless.  I had an amazing experience.  Everything from the friendly staff, to our flight instructor to the flight trainer (Ryan - great guy!), to the simulator - down to the take-off, flight and landing.  AMAZING.  I decided that I'm hooked.  I'll be a certified pilot before long... Thanks to Encore Fight Academy for a great experience.  I'll be sure to tell my friends and you can count on seeing me on the tarmac again soon.
