Delta Propel: How The Program Works

Propel by Delta is Delta Air Lines' pilot career path program, and its central promise is a Qualified Job Offer: a job offer as a Delta pilot that is contingent on successfully completing every part of the program. The route it defines is specific — reach ATP minimums, onboard at Endeavor Air, then progress to Delta through Endeavor's Career Advancement Program, which includes a minimum of 24 months of active service as a captain.

We are an independent Part 61 flight school at Van Nuys and we have no affiliation with Delta or with Propel. This page is informational and describes what Delta publishes on its own careers site, read on 13 September 2026. For the structure common to all these schemes, see airline cadet programs explained.

The Four Published Pathways

Delta publishes four career paths under the Propel banner:

Propel By Delta Published Pathways
Pathway Who It Is Aimed At
Collegiate and CFI Pilot Career Path Pilots actively instructing and close to meeting R-ATP or ATP requirements
Company Pilot Career Path Delta employees in other roles who want to move to the flight deck
Propel Scholarship Pilot Path Candidates entering through the program's scholarship route
Propel Talent Community A pool for candidates who want to stay connected to the program ahead of applying

Of the four, the Collegiate and CFI path is the one relevant to most people reading a flight school's website, because it is the route open to a working flight instructor rather than to a Delta employee or a university-program student.

Eligibility For The Collegiate And CFI Path

Delta publishes these requirements, quoted from its Propel page read 13 September 2026:

  • "Actively flight instructing as a certified flight instructor and within 12 months of meeting R-ATP/ATP requirements"
  • "FAA First Class Medical Certificate"
  • Hold a passport that allows you to "freely exit and re-enter the U.S."
  • "Legally eligible to work in the U.S. without sponsorship"

The first of those is the one that shapes when you apply. You are not eligible as a new commercial pilot, or as a fresh CFI at 250 hours. You become eligible when you are within twelve months of the hour requirement, which means the application belongs near the end of your time-building, not at the start of your training.

The first-class medical requirement is a reason to take a first-class examination as your first FAA medical rather than a third-class, if a professional career is the plan. We cover that on the first-class medical certificate.

What A Qualified Job Offer Actually Is

Delta defines the Qualified Job Offer as "a job offer as a Delta pilot contingent on the candidate successfully completing every part of the Propel by Delta program".

Read that sentence carefully, because the whole value of the program sits inside it. It is a job offer, which is more than most pathway programs promise. It is contingent on completing every part of the program, which is a multi-year obligation that includes flying for Endeavor Air and serving there as a captain. And like every conditional offer in this industry, it exists against a background in which airlines can defer class dates and pause hiring. A conditional offer is a strong commitment, not an unconditional one.

The Route Runs Through Endeavor Air

This is the most concrete thing Delta publishes, and the most important to understand before committing:

"Once you achieve ATP minimums, you will onboard at Endeavor Air. From there you will start your progression to Delta flight deck through Endeavor's Career Advancement Program (CAP) which includes a minimum of 24 months of active service as a captain."

Three consequences follow.

You Will Fly For A Regional First

Endeavor Air is a Delta Connection carrier. Propel is not a route that skips the regional stage; it is a route that specifies which regional and defines the progression out of it. For many candidates that is exactly the appeal, because the uncertainty of the regional-to-major move is the hardest part of an airline career to plan around.

You Must Upgrade To Captain, Then Serve 24 Months

The 24-month clock does not start when you are hired at Endeavor. It starts when you become a captain there. Upgrade time at any regional depends on that carrier's own seniority list and hiring cycle, so the total time from ATP minimums to a Delta flight deck is at minimum your upgrade time plus two years.

The Total Timeline Is Long

Putting our own planning assumptions alongside Delta's published requirement, and labeling them as ours: about nine months of full-time training to hold every rating through MEI at roughly 260 logged hours; about 18 months instructing at 70 flight hours a month to reach 1,500; then Endeavor, then upgrade, then 24 months as a captain. A candidate who moves quickly at every stage is still looking at five years or more from a first lesson to a Delta seat. That is not a criticism of Propel — it is what an airline career looks like — but it is worth seeing written down before you build a financial plan around it.

The Hour Requirement, And Why R-ATP Matters Here

Delta's eligibility language refers to "R-ATP/ATP requirements", which are set by federal regulation and not by any airline:

  • 14 CFR 61.159 requires 1,500 hours of total time for an unrestricted airline transport pilot certificate, including 500 hours of cross-country, 100 hours of night, 75 hours of instrument time and 250 hours of pilot-in-command time in an airplane.
  • 14 CFR 61.160 allows restricted privileges at 750 hours for qualifying military pilots, 1,000 hours with a qualifying bachelor's degree with an aviation major and 1,250 hours with a qualifying associate degree.

The reduced minimums require a degree from an institution with FAA authorization to certify its graduates. We are a Part 61 school and do not issue degrees, so our students plan on 1,500 hours. If you already hold a qualifying degree, you reach Propel eligibility — within twelve months of the requirement — several hundred hours earlier than a pilot who does not, which in practice can be most of a year.

Applying Directly Instead

Delta's own page notes that if you already meet the minimum requirements to become a Delta pilot, you can apply on its career site rather than through Propel. Propel exists to structure and de-risk the path for pilots who are not yet there; it is not the only door.

What This Means For A Part 61 Student At Van Nuys

Nothing about your training changes. The certificates are the same certificates, and the hour requirements are federal. What changes is timing: Propel is something you apply to as an instructor approaching 1,500 hours, not something you sign up for before your first lesson.

The practical implications for anyone planning around it are:

  1. Take a first-class medical as your first FAA medical. The eligibility requirement is explicit.
  2. Keep a clean checkride record. Every pathway program in the industry counts failures, and they follow you.
  3. Hold a valid passport. Delta lists it as an eligibility item, not a nicety.
  4. Build the right hours, not just hours. The 500 cross-country, 100 night and 75 instrument sub-totals in 61.159 are what run short for instructors. Our page on time-building jobs covers how to fill them.
  5. Decide whether you want the regional specified for you. That is the real trade Propel asks you to make.

Our airline pilot career program covers every rating through MEI over about nine months for $84,000, and our CFI, CFII and MEI program is $15,400 on its own. What Delta pays at the end of the road is on Delta pilot salary.

Delta Propel FAQ

What Is Delta Propel?

Propel by Delta is Delta Air Lines' pilot career path program. It publishes four pathways — Collegiate and CFI, Company, Scholarship, and the Propel Talent Community — and its central feature is a Qualified Job Offer, which Delta defines as a job offer as a Delta pilot contingent on successfully completing every part of the program.

What Are The Delta Propel Requirements?

For the Collegiate and CFI path, Delta publishes: actively flight instructing as a certified flight instructor and within 12 months of meeting R-ATP or ATP requirements; an FAA First Class Medical Certificate; a passport allowing you to freely exit and re-enter the United States; and legal eligibility to work in the US without sponsorship.

What Is A Qualified Job Offer?

Delta defines it as a job offer as a Delta pilot contingent on the candidate successfully completing every part of the Propel by Delta program. It is stronger than most pathway commitments in the industry, and it remains conditional on completing a multi-year progression that includes service at Endeavor Air.

Do Propel Candidates Fly For A Regional Airline First?

Yes. Delta publishes that once you achieve ATP minimums you will onboard at Endeavor Air, and progress to the Delta flight deck through Endeavor's Career Advancement Program, which includes a minimum of 24 months of active service as a captain.

How Long Does Delta Propel Take?

Delta publishes the 24-month captain requirement at Endeavor but not a total timeline. Adding our own planning assumptions — about nine months of full-time training to every rating through MEI, then about 18 months instructing to reach 1,500 hours — and then Endeavor hiring, upgrade to captain and 24 months as a captain, five years or more from a first lesson is realistic.

How Many Flight Hours Do You Need For Propel?

R-ATP or ATP minimums, which are federal. 14 CFR 61.159 requires 1,500 hours including 500 cross-country, 100 night and 75 instrument hours. 14 CFR 61.160 allows 750, 1,000 or 1,250 hours for military pilots and graduates of qualifying aviation degree programs. Eligibility begins when you are within 12 months of meeting them.

Can I Join Propel From A Part 61 Flight School?

The Collegiate and CFI path requires you to be actively instructing and close to ATP minimums rather than to have trained at a particular school, so the certificates you hold matter more than where you earned them. Without a qualifying aviation degree you will reach the hour requirement at 1,500 hours rather than 1,000 or 1,250.

Can I Apply To Delta Without Propel?

Yes. Delta's own page states that if you already meet the minimum requirements to become a Delta pilot you can apply on its career site. Propel is a structured route for pilots who are not yet there, not the only way in.

The Part We Can Actually Help With

Propel begins with a commercial certificate, a CFI certificate and a first-class medical, and that is the stage a flight school covers. A 60-minute discovery flight is $229, you fly it from the left seat with an instructor beside you, and it is credited in full toward training if you enroll within 24 hours. To plan the route from zero through commercial and instructor certificates, book a free consultation or call (818) 330-1318 any day between 9 AM and 9 PM.
