The nearest large flight school to Culver City is at Van Nuys Airport, about 19 miles north up the 405 from Culver City Hall, which is 25 to 50 minutes depending on the hour. You Fly LA is at 7900 Balboa Blvd on the west side of the field, and this page is about a question Culver City students rarely ask until it is too late: not where you will learn to fly, but where you will fly from afterwards.
A private pilot certificate is not the finish line. It is a license to keep renting airplanes for the next twenty years, and the school you train with is almost always the place you rent from, because you already hold its checkout, its insurance sign-off and its account. Choosing a training field is therefore a long decision dressed up as a short one. The general version of this argument is on our page about choosing a flight school in Los Angeles; this is the Culver City version.

Getting Here From Culver City: Straight Up The 405
Culver City is one of the easier drives on our service-area list because it is already on the corridor. Join the 405 north at Culver Boulevard, Venice Boulevard or the 90, run north through West Los Angeles, climb the Sepulveda Pass between the Getty and the 101, drop into the Valley and exit at Roscoe Boulevard. West on Roscoe, south on Balboa, and we are at 7900 Balboa Blvd on the left.
The surface alternative is Sepulveda Boulevard, which parallels the freeway the whole way including through the pass. It is never fast, but it moves when the 405 does not, and it is worth knowing on a day when something has closed a lane in the pass.
| Starting Point | Route | Approximate Distance | Drive Time Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Culver City Hall and Downtown Culver, 90232 | Culver Blvd to 405 N, exit Roscoe | About 19 miles | 25 to 50 minutes |
| Fox Hills and Blanco-Culver Crest, 90230 | Slauson to 405 N, exit Roscoe | About 21 miles | 28 to 52 minutes |
| Hayden Tract and the studio lots, 90232 | National Blvd to 405 N, exit Roscoe | About 19 miles | 25 to 50 minutes |
| Palms and Mar Vista side, 90066 | Venice Blvd to 405 N, exit Roscoe | About 19 miles | 25 to 48 minutes |
| Baldwin Hills and Ladera side, 90008 | La Cienega to 405 N, exit Roscoe | About 22 miles | 30 to 55 minutes |
The Honest Version Of That Drive
One stretch decides everything: the Sepulveda Pass. Northbound between roughly three and seven on a weekday it is the slowest freeway in Southern California, and southbound between seven and ten in the morning it is not much better. Everything from Culver City to the 101 is ordinary city traffic that behaves predictably.
The direction of travel helps you. You drive north in the morning and south in the afternoon, both against the dominant commute. A ten o'clock weekday slot is a genuine 30 minutes each way. A five o'clock weekday slot is 50 minutes home and will eventually make you stop booking. If evenings are your only option, use them for ground instruction and simulator work and keep the flying for mornings and weekends. We are open 9 AM to 9 PM every day of the week, so both are available.
Three And Four Hour Blocks
Nineteen miles is short enough that a single lesson is not absurd, but you will still get more out of a block. The pattern that works:
- A flight plus a simulator hour. Ninety minutes in the airplane and an hour in the Redbird MCX. Radio work, emergencies and instrument procedures repeat cheaply in the box and expensively in the air.
- A flight plus ground instruction. One hour of ground after the debrief is what moves the written exam along, and it is the part students on a tight schedule always cut first.
- Two flights in a morning. A 1.5-hour lesson, a break, then a shorter second flight. One drive, most of a week's flying.
- Twice a week. Four to five flight hours a week is the cadence that keeps the 40-hour minimum in 14 CFR 61.109 from becoming 70 real hours.
Think Past The Checkride: Where Will You Rent?

Here is the part almost nobody plans for. A certificate is the start of a rental relationship, and rental relationships are built on three things that do not transfer: a current checkout in the specific make and model, a school's insurance approval, and a history of flying there that makes the desk comfortable handing you keys.
Culver City students are unusually exposed to this. The natural coastal alternative, Santa Monica Airport, is scheduled to close on 31 December 2028 under a consent decree and its runway has already been shortened to 3,500 feet. If you train there now and finish in eighteen months, you will have roughly five useful years before you have to rebuild all three of those things somewhere else. We wrote the detail up at Santa Monica Airport closure and flight training.
What continuity actually looks like at a field with no closure date:
- Rental on the aircraft you trained in. Cessna 162 Skycatchers and Piper Warriors at $269 an hour retail, wet. Details on aircraft rental at Van Nuys.
- A flight review every 24 calendar months. 14 CFR 61.56 requires one hour of ground and one hour of flight with an instructor. Doing it where you trained means the instructor already knows your flying.
- Passenger currency. Three takeoffs and landings in 90 days under 14 CFR 61.57(a), and at night the same in the period from one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise under 61.57(b). Easy at a field you can reach in half an hour.
- Step-ups without starting over. A complex endorsement in the Piper Arrow at $999 under 14 CFR 61.31(e), a high-performance endorsement in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo at $1,799 under 61.31(f), an instrument rating at $11,700.
Why Van Nuys Specifically
It is a Class D towered field with two parallel runways, 16R/34L at 8,001 feet and 16L/34R at 4,000 feet, sitting directly under the Los Angeles Class B shelf, and it is one of the world's busiest general aviation airports. Two runways matters more than it sounds: it is the difference between training traffic and business traffic sharing one strip and having somewhere to put the pattern.
The fleet runs to about twenty airplanes and the school covers every certificate from sport pilot through flight instructor, so nothing in your flying life after the checkride requires a change of address. It is also inland, on the far side of the Santa Monica Mountains from the marine layer, which is why a Valley field generally clears earlier on a June morning than a field three miles from the water.
What It Costs
| Item | Detail | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery flight | 60 / 90 / 120 minutes, you fly | $229 / $299 / $399 |
| Full-motion simulator session | 60 minutes | $189 |
| Private Pilot, Standard | 38 hours aircraft, 30 hours dual | $10,400 |
| Private Pilot, Comprehensive | 55 hours aircraft, 50 hours dual | $15,400 |
| Sport Pilot course | 25 hours flight, 3 hours simulator | $8,400 |
| Instrument Rating | 20 hours aircraft, 20 hours simulator | $11,700 |
| Complex endorsement, Piper Arrow | 14 CFR 61.31(e) | $999 |
| High-performance endorsement, Cirrus SR22 Turbo | 14 CFR 61.31(f) | $1,799 |
| Cessna 162 or Piper Warrior rental | Per hour, wet, retail | $269 |
| Diamond DA20-C1 rental | Per hour, wet, retail | $329 |
| Instructor | Per hour, aircraft or simulator | $110 |
Package rates apply inside a course and retail rates apply to rental and pay-as-you-go. Training is under Part 61; we do not hold Part 141, do not issue I-20s, and do not accept GI Bill funding for a private pilot certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is There A Flight School In Culver City?
No. Culver City has no airport. The nearest general aviation fields are Santa Monica, about 7 miles west, and Van Nuys, about 19 miles north up the 405.
How Far Is Van Nuys Airport From Culver City?
About 19 miles from Culver City Hall, essentially all of it on the 405 north. Allow 25 to 30 minutes off-peak and up to 50 minutes if you cross the Sepulveda Pass in the weekday evening peak.
Why Not Just Train At Santa Monica, It Is Closer?
It is closer, and for a short course it is a fair choice. The complication is that Santa Monica Airport is scheduled to close on 31 December 2028 and its runway has already been shortened to 3,500 feet, so the field you train at may not be the field you can rent from in a few years.
Can I Rent Your Airplanes After I Get My Certificate?
Yes. Rental is at the retail rates, which are $269 an hour wet for the Cessna 162 and Piper Warrior and $329 for the Diamond DA20-C1, after a checkout. Our aircraft rental and checkout pages set out the requirements.
What Is A Flight Review And How Often Do I Need One?
Under 14 CFR 61.56 you need a flight review every 24 calendar months to act as pilot in command, consisting of at least one hour of ground training and one hour of flight training with an authorized instructor.
How Do I Stay Current To Carry Passengers?
Three takeoffs and landings in the preceding 90 days in the same category and class under 14 CFR 61.57(a), and for night passengers three to a full stop in the period from one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise under 61.57(b).
How Often Should I Fly During Training?
Twice a week if you can. Four to five flight hours a week is what keeps the 40-hour minimum in 14 CFR 61.109 from turning into 70 hours, and at 19 miles each way that is an achievable target.
Do You Do Discovery Flights Over The West Side?
Yes. A standard route from Van Nuys takes in the Santa Monica Mountains, the coast and the Downtown skyline. Sixty minutes is $229, you fly it from the left seat, and it is credited in full toward a course if you enroll within 24 hours.
Come Up And Fly An Hour
Book a discovery flight at $229 for 60 minutes, drive up on a weekday morning, and fly it yourself from the left seat. If you would rather ask about the long game first, book a free consultation and we will talk through training, rental and what your flying looks like five years after the checkride.
