Marina del Rey has no airfield, so the nearest full-service flight school is at Van Nuys Airport, about 21 miles north, which is 28 to 55 minutes up the 90 and the 405. You Fly LA is at 7900 Balboa Blvd on the west side of the field, and if you already keep a boat in the Marina you will recognize the shape of what follows, because flying and boating run on almost identical logic.
You buy access to a machine, you maintain a qualification to use it, and the whole point is the destinations. That last part is what most flight school pages forget to tell you, so this one is built around it: where a private certificate earned at Van Nuys actually lets you go. For the wider comparison of schools and fields, start with choosing a flight school in Los Angeles.

Getting Here From Marina Del Rey
The clean route is the 90 east to the 405 north, then straight up. From Admiralty Way or Via Marina, head inland on the Marina Freeway, join the 405 north, run past Culver City and West Los Angeles, climb the Sepulveda Pass and drop into the Valley. Exit at Roscoe Boulevard, west on Roscoe, south on Balboa, and we are on the left.
From the beach end of the Marina, Lincoln Boulevard north to Venice Boulevard and then the 405 is the alternative, and Sepulveda Boulevard is the surface parallel through the pass when the freeway has stopped. Neither is quick; both are predictable.
| Starting Point | Route | Approximate Distance | Drive Time Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Admiralty Way and Fisherman's Village, 90292 | 90 E to 405 N, exit Roscoe | About 21 miles | 28 to 55 minutes |
| Via Marina and the Peninsula, 90292 | Washington Blvd to 90 E to 405 N | About 22 miles | 30 to 55 minutes |
| Marina Del Rey north of Ballona Creek, 90292 | Lincoln Blvd to Venice Blvd to 405 N | About 21 miles | 28 to 52 minutes |
| Playa Vista and Playa del Rey side, 90094 | 90 E to 405 N, exit Roscoe | About 22 miles | 30 to 55 minutes |
| Del Rey and Mar Vista side, 90066 | Venice Blvd to 405 N, exit Roscoe | About 20 miles | 27 to 50 minutes |
The Honest Version Of That Drive
The Marina Freeway and the lower 405 are ordinary. The Sepulveda Pass is not. Northbound between roughly three and seven on a weekday it is the single worst stretch of freeway in the region, and southbound between seven and ten in the morning it is close behind.
As with everyone on the west side, the direction saves you. You are driving north in the morning and south in the afternoon, both against the flow, so a mid-morning weekday slot is a comfortable half hour each way. A late-afternoon weekday slot is not, and we would rather warn you now than watch you quietly stop coming in month three. Weekend mornings are the best drive of the week, and we are open 9 AM to 9 PM every day.
Three And Four Hour Blocks
Twenty-one miles justifies a block rather than a single hour. Fill the visit:
- Ninety minutes in the airplane plus an hour in the simulator. The Redbird MCX full-motion simulator is where radio work, emergencies and instrument procedures repeat cheaply.
- Flight plus an hour of ground. Ground instruction is where the written exam gets passed and it is the first thing a rushed student drops.
- Two flights with a break between. A 1.5-hour lesson, a coffee, then a shorter second flight. One drive, most of a week's flying.
- Twice a week, four to five hours. That cadence is what keeps the 40-hour minimum in 14 CFR 61.109 from turning into 70 real hours.
What You Can Actually Reach From Van Nuys

This is the part that decides whether a certificate is worth the money to you. A Piper Warrior cruises at about 128 knots and a Cirrus SR22 Turbo at about 215 knots, which puts a surprising amount of California inside a morning.
| Destination | Why Pilots Go | Typical Trip |
|---|---|---|
| Catalina Island, Avalon | The airport in the sky, a mesa runway and a short ride to Avalon | Under an hour each way in a Warrior |
| Santa Barbara | Coastal run past Malibu and Ventura, then lunch in town | About 45 minutes each way |
| Santa Ynez and the wine country | Short field, quiet pattern, easy taxi into Los Olivos | Under an hour each way |
| Big Bear | Mountain airport at altitude, worth a proper checkout first | About an hour each way |
| Camarillo | The standard first cross-country from Van Nuys, 35 miles west | About 20 minutes each way |
Mountain and island fields both deserve respect and specific training rather than enthusiasm, which is why we run a mountain flying checkout and why flying to Catalina has its own page. Our list of cross-country destinations from Van Nuys covers the rest.
The privileges that make those trips legal are in 14 CFR 61.113: as a private pilot you may carry passengers and fly for your own transport, but not for compensation or hire, and you may share the operating expenses of a flight with your passengers within the limits of that section. Read it once properly before you offer anyone a lift.
Coastal Weather, Inland Field
If you live three blocks from the water you already know what May and June do. The marine layer forms overnight and sits over the coast until somewhere between mid-morning and early afternoon, and a field a few miles inland on the far side of the Santa Monica Mountains generally clears first or never goes in at all.
For a student that is not a weather footnote, it is a calendar. A canceled lesson does not just move; it costs you the currency you built in the last one. Training inland and flying to the coast is the arrangement that loses fewest mornings, and it is the main practical reason Marina del Rey students end up at Van Nuys rather than somewhere nearer the sand. Our page on flyable days at Van Nuys goes through the seasonal pattern.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is There A Flight School In Marina Del Rey?
No. Marina del Rey has no airfield. The nearest general aviation airports are Santa Monica, about 5 miles north, and Van Nuys, about 21 miles north via the 90 and the 405.
How Far Is Van Nuys Airport From Marina Del Rey?
About 21 miles. Allow 28 to 30 minutes off-peak and up to 55 minutes if you cross the Sepulveda Pass between four and seven on a weekday afternoon.
Can I Fly To Catalina Once I Have My Certificate?
Yes. Catalina is under an hour each way from Van Nuys in a Piper Warrior. It is a mesa runway with its own quirks, so fly it first with an instructor rather than on your own the week after your checkride.
Can I Take Friends And Split The Cost Of A Flight?
You may carry passengers as a private pilot and you may share the operating expenses of a flight with them within the limits of 14 CFR 61.113. You may not fly for compensation or hire. Read that section carefully before you agree anything.
Does The Marine Layer Cancel Many Lessons?
Fewer at Van Nuys than at a coastal field. The layer sits over the coast in late spring and early summer and generally clears earlier a few miles inland, which is why training inland and flying to the coast loses fewer mornings.
How Fast Are The Airplanes, Really?
The Piper Warrior cruises at about 128 knots, the Cessna 162 Skycatcher at about 118, the Piper Arrow at about 135, the Piper Seminole at about 162 and the Cirrus SR22 Turbo at about 215 knots.
How Long Will It Take Me To Get A Private Pilot Certificate?
The legal minimum is 40 hours under 14 CFR 61.109. Flying twice a week most people finish between 50 and 60 hours over six to nine months. Flying once a fortnight roughly doubles the calendar.
Can Two Of Us Come On A Discovery Flight?
Yes. The discovery flight for two is $299, $399 or $499 for 60, 90 or 120 minutes, one of you flies and the other rides, with a combined weight limit of 360 lb. The Cirrus version is $399, $549 or $699 with a 400 lb combined limit.
