Private Pilot Oral Exam Guide: What The Examiner Will Ask

The private pilot oral is a structured conversation against the Airman Certification Standards, usually lasting between ninety minutes and two and a half hours, and it is built almost entirely out of Area of Operation I, Preflight Preparation, anchored to the cross-country flight the examiner asked you to plan. How An Oral Is Actually Structured

Examiners do not work down a list of trivia. They work down the ACS, and within each task they are looking for the knowledge, risk management and skill elements printed there. The single most useful preparation you can do is to open the private pilot ACS and read Area I task by task, because that document is the syllabus for the conversation you are about to have.

Most orals follow a predictable arc. The examiner starts with paperwork: your certificates, your logbook, the endorsements, the aircraft's records. That segment is a genuine pass-or-fail gate, because a missing endorsement ends the day before anything is discussed. Then the cross-country you planned becomes the spine of everything else, and the examiner walks along it asking about weather, airspace, performance, systems and the decisions you made.

The most common reason candidates struggle is not gaps in knowledge. It is answering a different question from the one asked, or padding a two-sentence answer into five minutes and wandering into something they do not know. Answer what was asked, stop, and let the examiner ask the next one. If you do not know something, say so and say where you would find it. "I would look that up in the POH, section four" is a complete and correct answer far more often than candidates believe.

Area I, Task A: Pilot Qualifications

What certificates and documents must you have on board to act as pilot in command today?

A pilot certificate, a medical certificate, and photo identification, under 14 CFR 61.3. The identification must be government-issued, and the medical must be appropriate to the operation. A student flying solo also carries the student pilot certificate and the logbook containing the endorsements.

When does a third class medical expire?

Under 14 CFR 61.23(d), a third class medical certificate is valid for 60 calendar months if you were under 40 at the time of the examination, and 24 calendar months if you were 40 or over. It expires at the end of the last day of the month, not on the date of the exam.

What makes you current to carry passengers?

14 CFR 61.57(a) requires three takeoffs and three landings within the preceding 90 days in the same category, class and type if a type rating is required. For night, 61.57(b) requires those three takeoffs and landings to have been made to a full stop between one hour after sunset and one hour before sunrise. Currency and proficiency are different things, and the regulation is a floor.

What is a flight review and when do you need one?

14 CFR 61.56. Within the preceding 24 calendar months you must have completed a flight review consisting of at least one hour of ground training and one hour of flight training with an authorized instructor, and received a logbook endorsement. Certain events, such as completing a proficiency check or adding a rating, satisfy the requirement in its place.

What may you not do as a private pilot?

14 CFR 61.113. You may not act as pilot in command of an aircraft carrying passengers or property for compensation or hire, and you may not act as pilot in command for compensation or hire. You may share the pro rata share of the operating expenses of a flight with your passengers, and there are specific exceptions for charitable flights, search and rescue, and incidental business travel where the flight is not the business itself.

Area I, Task B: Airworthiness Requirements

What documents must be on board the aircraft?

Airworthiness certificate, registration, operating limitations including the approved flight manual and any placards, and weight and balance data. The airworthiness certificate must be displayed where it is legible to passengers and crew. Pilots remember this as ARROW, but the examiner is listening for what each document is and why it is there, not for the acronym.

What inspections must have been completed for you to fly today?

An annual inspection within the preceding 12 calendar months under 14 CFR 91.409. A 100-hour inspection if the aircraft is carrying persons for hire or being used for flight instruction for hire, also under 91.409. An ELT battery and inspection requirement under 91.207. A transponder test within the preceding 24 calendar months under 91.413. Applicable airworthiness directives complied with. For IFR you would add the static system, altimeter and altitude reporting equipment test within 24 calendar months under 91.411, and the VOR accuracy check within 30 days under 91.171.

What instruments and equipment are required for a VFR day flight?

14 CFR 91.205(b): airspeed indicator, altimeter, magnetic direction indicator, tachometer for each engine, oil pressure gauge for each engine using a pressure system, temperature gauge for each liquid-cooled engine, oil temperature gauge for each air-cooled engine, manifold pressure gauge for each altitude engine, a fuel gauge for each tank, a landing gear position indicator if the gear retracts, an approved anticollision light system on small civil airplanes certificated after 11 March 1996, safety belts and shoulder harnesses as required, flotation gear for certain over-water operations for hire, and an ELT if required by 91.207.

What does night add?

Under 91.205(c): everything required for day, plus approved position lights, an approved aviation red or aviation white anticollision light system, one electric landing light if the aircraft is operated for hire, an adequate source of electrical energy for all installed electrical and radio equipment, and one spare set of fuses or three spare fuses of each kind required, accessible in flight.

Something on that list is broken. Can you fly?

Work through 14 CFR 91.213(d) for an aircraft without a minimum equipment list. The item must not be part of the VFR-day type certification requirements, not listed as required in the aircraft's equipment list or operations limitations, not required by 91.205 or any other rule for the planned flight, and not required by an airworthiness directive. If it clears all of that, the item is removed or deactivated and placarded inoperative, and a pilot or mechanic makes the determination that the aircraft is safe for flight as appropriate to the item. If it does not clear all of that, the aircraft is not airworthy for the flight.

Area I, Task C: Weather Information

Walk me through the weather for the flight you planned.

This is the question that separates candidates. Give a briefing, not a recital: the synoptic picture first, then what it means for this route at this time. Surface analysis and prognostic charts, METARs and TAFs at departure, destination and alternates, winds and temperatures aloft for your cruising altitude, AIRMETs and SIGMETs, PIREPs, and then a conclusion. The conclusion is the part candidates omit, and it is the part being assessed.

What are the basic VFR weather minimums in Class E below 10,000 feet?

Three statute miles flight visibility, 500 feet below cloud, 1,000 feet above cloud, and 2,000 feet horizontally from cloud, under 14 CFR 91.155(a). At or above 10,000 feet MSL in Class E it becomes five statute miles, 1,000 feet below, 1,000 feet above and one statute mile horizontally.

And in Class B, C and D?

Class B is three statute miles and clear of clouds. Class C and Class D are both three statute miles with 500 below, 1,000 above and 2,000 horizontal. You also may not take off, land or enter the traffic pattern in a Class B, C, D or E surface area unless ground visibility is at least three statute miles, or flight visibility during landing or takeoff if ground visibility is not reported, under 91.155(d).

What are the requirements for structural icing to form?

Visible moisture and an airframe temperature at or below freezing. Both conditions must be present. The practical consequence for a Van Nuys pilot is that icing is a winter and altitude question rather than an everyday one, but a flight over the Grapevine into the Central Valley in January can find it easily.

What produces a thunderstorm, and what are its stages?

Sufficient water vapor, an unstable lapse rate and a lifting action. The three stages are cumulus, characterized by updrafts; mature, beginning when precipitation reaches the surface and containing both updrafts and downdrafts, and the most dangerous stage; and dissipating, dominated by downdrafts. The operational answer is that you avoid the cell by at least 20 nautical miles and never attempt to fly beneath one.

Area I, Task D: Cross-Country Flight Planning

What preflight action is required before a cross-country flight?

14 CFR 91.103 requires you to become familiar with all available information concerning that flight, and specifically, for a flight not in the vicinity of an airport, weather reports and forecasts, fuel requirements, alternatives available if the flight cannot be completed as planned, and any known traffic delays. For any flight it also requires runway lengths at airports of intended use and the takeoff and landing distance data in the approved flight manual.

How much fuel must you have on board?

Under 14 CFR 91.151, enough fuel, considering wind and forecast weather conditions, to fly to the first point of intended landing and, assuming normal cruising speed, to fly after that for at least 30 minutes by day or 45 minutes at night. That is a legal minimum and a poor personal minimum; most experienced pilots plan an hour on landing.

Why did you choose that altitude?

Expect to defend it. Good answers combine terrain clearance, the winds aloft, cloud bases and tops, airspace, glide options, and the hemispheric rule in 14 CFR 91.159, which above 3,000 feet AGL requires odd thousands plus 500 on a magnetic course of 0 to 179 degrees and even thousands plus 500 on 180 to 359.

When do you need supplemental oxygen?

14 CFR 91.211. The required minimum flight crew must use supplemental oxygen for that part of the flight at cabin pressure altitudes above 12,500 feet MSL up to and including 14,000 feet MSL that exceeds 30 minutes, and at all times above 14,000 feet MSL. Above 15,000 feet MSL each occupant must be provided with supplemental oxygen.

What is your plan if the destination weather has gone down when you get there?

The examiner is testing risk management rather than recall. A good answer names the decision point on the route, the fuel state at which you commit, the alternates you identified during planning and why, and the point at which you would turn around. An answer that consists only of "I would divert" has not answered it.

Area I, Task E: The National Airspace System

What is the airspace over Van Nuys, and what do you need to operate there?

Van Nuys is Class D surface area up to a published altitude, sitting beneath the Los Angeles Class B shelf. Class D requires two-way radio communications established with the tower before entering, and a Mode C transponder is required within 30 nautical miles of the Class B primary airport under 91.215. Entering the Class B itself requires a specific ATC clearance, and the words you are listening for are "cleared into the Class Bravo".

What equipment do you need for Class B, Class C and above 10,000 feet?

Class B requires a two-way radio, a Mode C transponder and, for operations in and above the Class B lateral limits, ADS-B Out under 91.225. Class C requires two-way radio and Mode C. Above 10,000 feet MSL over the 48 contiguous states, excluding airspace at and below 2,500 feet AGL, Mode C and ADS-B Out are required.

What are special use airspace types and which affect you here?

Prohibited, restricted, warning, military operations, alert and controlled firing areas. In Southern California the practical ones are the restricted areas over the ranges to the north and east, and temporary flight restrictions, which around Los Angeles are a live and frequent issue. Checking TFRs is part of 91.103, not an optional extra.

What are the Special Flight Rules Area procedures over Los Angeles?

The Los Angeles Special Flight Rules Area over LAX allows VFR transit at published altitudes without a Class B clearance, with specified headings and frequencies. If you name it, be ready to describe the altitudes and procedures from the chart rather than from memory of a conversation. Area I, Task F: Performance And Limitations

Show me the weight and balance for this flight.

Have it computed, on paper, with the moment arms from this specific airframe's weight and balance data rather than a generic figure for the type. Be ready to show the loaded center of gravity inside the envelope at both takeoff and landing weight, and to explain what fuel burn does to the center of gravity in this airplane.

What happens if the center of gravity is too far aft?

The airplane becomes less longitudinally stable, the stall speed decreases slightly, the stall becomes more likely to develop into a spin and harder to recover from, and control forces lighten to the point of being deceptive. Forward of limits the airplane is more stable but heavier in pitch, needs more elevator authority at low speed, and may not flare properly.

Define density altitude and tell me why it matters today.

Pressure altitude corrected for non-standard temperature. It matters because performance is a function of air density, not of the number on the altimeter. On a July afternoon at Van Nuys, an 800-foot field elevation can produce a density altitude well above 3,000 feet, which lengthens the takeoff roll, flattens the climb and reduces the power available. The answer the examiner wants ends with the numbers you took from the performance charts, not with a definition.

What is the difference between VX and VY?

VX is the best angle of climb speed, giving the greatest altitude gain per unit of horizontal distance, used to clear an obstacle. VY is the best rate of climb speed, giving the greatest altitude gain per unit of time. VX increases with altitude and VY decreases, and they converge at the absolute ceiling.

Area I, Task G: Operation Of Systems

Describe the fuel system in this airplane.

Answer for the airplane you brought, not for a generic trainer. Tank capacity, usable and unusable fuel, how fuel reaches the engine, the selector positions and what each does, where the drains are, and what the gauges do and do not tell you. If the airplane is gravity-fed, say so and explain what that means for the fuel selector in a slip.

What does carburetor heat do, and when do you use it?

It routes air across a heat exchanger on the exhaust before it reaches the carburetor, raising the induction air temperature to melt or prevent ice in the venturi. It reduces power because the warmer air is less dense, and it enriches the mixture. You use it whenever carburetor icing conditions are likely, most commonly at low power settings in humid air, and in a Cessna as part of the descent and landing checks. On a fuel-injected engine there is no carburetor and the relevant concern is alternate air and vapor lock instead.

Why does an engine have two magnetos?

Redundancy and performance. Each magneto is independent of the aircraft electrical system, so the engine keeps running after an electrical failure. Two spark plugs per cylinder firing from opposite sides gives a more complete and faster burn, which is why you see a small RPM drop when you switch to one during the runup. An excessive drop, or no drop at all, both indicate a problem.

What is the pitot-static system, and what fails if the static port blocks?

The pitot tube senses ram air pressure and feeds the airspeed indicator. The static ports sense ambient pressure and feed the airspeed indicator, altimeter and vertical speed indicator. With a blocked static port the altimeter freezes at the last indication, the vertical speed indicator reads zero, and the airspeed indicator becomes unreliable, over-reading in a descent and under-reading in a climb. The alternate static source is the remedy, and in an unpressurized cabin it will read slightly differently because of cabin pressure.

Explain the electrical system and what you would do with an alternator failure.

Describe the alternator or generator, the battery, the bus structure, the master and alternator switches, and the ammeter or loadmeter and how to read it in this airplane. On a failure, reduce electrical load to essentials, note the time so you can estimate remaining battery endurance, and land at a suitable airport. Be honest about what you actually lose, which in a modern glass-panel trainer is more than in a steam-gauge one.

Area I, Task H: Human Factors

How do you assess your own fitness to fly?

IMSAFE: illness, medication, stress, alcohol, fatigue, and emotion or eating. Behind the acronym sits 14 CFR 61.53, which prohibits acting as pilot in command while you know or have reason to know of a medical condition that would make you unable to operate the aircraft safely. Say what you would actually do, not just the letters.

What is the alcohol rule?

14 CFR 91.17. No person may act or attempt to act as a crewmember within 8 hours after consuming alcohol, while under the influence, while using any drug that affects the person's faculties contrary to safety, or with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.04 or greater.

Name the hazardous attitudes and their antidotes.

Anti-authority, answered with "follow the rules, they are usually right"; impulsivity, answered with "not so fast, think first"; invulnerability, answered with "it could happen to me"; macho, answered with "taking chances is foolish"; and resignation, answered with "I am not helpless, I can make a difference". Expect a follow-up asking which one you personally are most prone to, and expect the examiner to notice if your answer is that you have none of them.

What are the symptoms of hypoxia and what do you do about it?

Impaired judgment, euphoria, headache, tingling, visual impairment, cyanosis and a drop in coordination, with the insidious feature being that judgment degrades before the pilot notices. The response is oxygen, descent, and landing. Night vision is affected well below the altitudes at which oxygen is legally required, which is why many pilots use oxygen above 5,000 feet at night.

What is spatial disorientation and how do you avoid it?

A conflict between what the vestibular and somatosensory systems report and what is actually happening, which is resolved only by outside visual reference or by the instruments. Avoid it by staying in visual conditions as a VFR pilot, and if you enter cloud, by trusting the instruments over your inner ear and executing a 180-degree level turn back out.

Area II: Preflight Procedures

Where do you find the information for the preflight inspection?

The approved flight manual or pilot's operating handbook for this airframe, section four. Not a laminated card of unknown provenance, and not the version for a different model year.

What are you looking for when you sump the fuel?

Water, sediment and the correct grade and color of fuel. Blue for 100LL. Sump every drain, including the gascolator, and take enough of a sample to be meaningful. If you find water, keep draining until it is clear and then think hard about why it was there.

How do you check the oil and what is the minimum?

Quantity against the dipstick and the minimum for flight stated in the flight manual for this airplane, plus a look for leaks and for oil on the belly. Quote the figure for the airplane you brought.

Emergency And Night Knowledge

The engine fails at 2,000 feet AGL. Talk me through it.

Pitch for best glide immediately, pick a field, then run the flow and the checklist: fuel selector, mixture, carburetor heat or alternate air, magnetos, primer, and the electric fuel pump if fitted. If it does not restart, secure the engine, transmit on 121.5 or the frequency in use, squawk 7700, brief the passengers, and fly the airplane all the way to the ground. Know the best glide speed and the glide ratio for your airplane as numbers.

What do you do about an in-flight fire?

Identify the source. For an engine fire, mixture to idle cut-off, fuel selector off, cabin heat and air off, and establish a high-speed descent to a landing. For an electrical fire, master off and the appropriate checklist, then land. The common thread is that the airplane is going to land shortly in every version of this answer.

What are the night-specific hazards you would brief?

Degraded visual references, the black-hole approach illusion, false horizons, terrain you cannot see, fewer options in an engine failure, and the need for a torch and spare batteries. Physiologically, night vision takes around 30 minutes to adapt, is degraded by bright light, and off-center viewing works better than looking directly at a faint object.

Ten Habits That Make An Oral Go Well

  1. Bring the ACS and know Area I task by task.
  2. Have the cross-country planned on paper and be able to defend every number on it.
  3. Check your logbook endorsements against the ACS appendix the week before, not the morning of.
  4. Bring the flight manual for the specific airframe and use it during the oral rather than guessing.
  5. Answer the question asked, then stop talking.
  6. Say "I do not know, and here is where I would look" whenever it is true.
  7. Turn regulation numbers into consequences: what you may or may not do, not just the citation.
  8. Be ready to say what your personal minimums are and why they differ from the legal ones.
  9. Fly the cross-country you planned at least once in your training so the geography is familiar.
  10. Sleep. A tired candidate fails on judgment questions that a rested one answers easily.
