ForeFlight For Student Pilots: Setup, Discounts And What To Ignore

ForeFlight publishes three consumer plans on its own pricing page: Starter at $130 a year, Essential at $260 a year and Premium at $390 a year, as listed on foreflight.com/pricing when this page was written on 13 September 2026. For a private pilot student the cheapest plan does everything you need, and the expensive features solve problems you do not have yet.

There is no public ForeFlight coupon code. If you searched for one and landed on a site offering a percentage off, that site is an affiliate page recycling expired or invented promotions, and the code will not work. What does genuinely reduce the cost is choosing the right plan, paying annually rather than monthly, and asking about any current education or flight training program through ForeFlight directly or through your instructor. This page is part of our student pilot resources, and it covers the plans, the setup, and the long list of features a student should ignore.

The Plans, And Which One A Student Actually Needs

ForeFlight Consumer Plans As Published On foreflight.com/pricing, 13 September 2026
Plan Annual Price Who It Suits
Starter $130 Student pilots and VFR private pilots. Charts, airport data, flight planning, weather, logbook
Essential $260 Instrument-rated pilots who want procedure charts and more capable planning
Premium $390 Pilots flying complex, high-performance or turbine aircraft who need the advanced performance tools

Prices and plan contents change. Check the current page before you subscribe, and treat the figures above as what was published on the date given rather than as a quotation from us.

Our advice to private pilot students is consistently the same: buy the cheapest plan. The features that separate the tiers are almost entirely instrument and turbine related. You will know when you need more, because an instrument instructor will tell you, and upgrading mid-subscription is straightforward.

There Is No ForeFlight Coupon Code

Searching for a ForeFlight discount code, promo code or coupon turns up dozens of pages offering one. They fall into three categories, and none of them is a real discount.

  • Coupon aggregator sites. These generate pages for every brand whether or not a code exists, fill them with expired codes and let users vote on whether they worked. The codes do not work.
  • Affiliate blogs. Pages that promise a code and then send you to the standard pricing page through a tracking link. You pay full price and the site earns a commission.
  • Genuinely old promotions. Occasionally a real, time-limited offer from a trade show or a partner organization gets scraped and reposted years later without the expiry date.

What is worth checking, because these do come and go and are announced by the organizations themselves rather than by coupon sites:

  • ForeFlight's own site has an education and flight training section. Terms change, so read it directly rather than trusting a summary, and ask your instructor what current students are using.
  • Membership organizations such as AOPA and EAA have offered member benefits on aviation software at various times. If you are a member, check the member benefits page.
  • Flight schools sometimes have arrangements for enrolled students. Ask us at the front desk before you subscribe; if something is available we will tell you, and if it is not we will say so.

We will not publish a code, because a code we cannot verify is worse than no code at all.

Setting It Up Before Your First Lesson

Most students install ForeFlight, look at the moving map and stop there. Twenty minutes of setup makes the difference between a pretty map and a tool your instructor will actually let you use.

Download The Region Before You Leave Home

Charts, airport diagrams and terrain data are downloaded, not streamed. Go into Downloads, select the Southwest region or a custom area around Southern California, and let it complete on Wi-Fi. An iPad with no cell signal at 3,000 ft over the Valley and no downloaded charts is a paperweight.

Build The Aircraft Profile Properly

Enter the aircraft you fly, with its true airspeed, fuel burn, fuel capacity and the weight and balance envelope from the Pilot's Operating Handbook. For a Piper Warrior PA-28-161 that means a cruise in the region of 115 to 120 KTAS and a maximum gross weight of 2,325 lb. A profile with default numbers produces flight plans that are wrong in ways you will not notice.

Load Your Documents

The Documents section holds PDFs. Put the POH for the aircraft you fly, the Airman Certification Standards for your certificate, the Aeronautical Information Manual and your checklists in there. Having the POH on the same device as the chart is a genuine workflow improvement and it is free.

Turn On The Logbook

ForeFlight's logbook is included and it will take your flights automatically once you are flying regularly. Whether you keep a paper logbook as well is a matter of taste; many pilots do both for the first certificate and then go digital. Either way, start logging from your first flight, including your discovery flight.

Set The Map Up For VFR

Sectional as the base layer, with weather overlaid when you want it. Resist the urge to switch on every layer available; a cluttered map is harder to read than a paper chart, and the whole point is situational awareness.

What To Ignore As A Student

ForeFlight is built for professional pilots flying complex aircraft in the system. Most of it is not for you yet.

  • Instrument approach plates and procedures. Interesting, irrelevant until you start an instrument rating.
  • Synthetic vision and the 3D view. Impressive demonstrations that encourage exactly the head-down habit a VFR student needs to avoid.
  • Hazard Advisor as a terrain crutch. Useful as a backup. Dangerous as a primary means of avoiding terrain, which is a job for planning and for looking outside.
  • Advanced performance profiles. Built for turbine aircraft. Your Warrior does not need a climb schedule.
  • An ADS-B receiver in your first ten hours. Traffic and weather in the cockpit are genuinely valuable, and they will still be valuable after you have learned to look out of the window first.
  • Every map layer at once. Pick sectional plus one overlay.

ForeFlight And Your Checkride

Electronic flight bags are accepted on FAA practical tests, and most examiners in Southern California expect to see one. Three things to know.

First, you still have to demonstrate the underlying skill. Expect to plot a course on a paper sectional with a plotter, complete a manual navigation log, and calculate fuel, time and distance by hand. An examiner who suspects the app is doing the thinking will ask you to do it the long way.

Second, expect a question about failure. 14 CFR 91.103 requires you to become familiar with all available information concerning a flight, and an examiner will reasonably ask what you would do if the tablet overheated or the battery died. A charged backup, a paper chart, or a second device are all acceptable answers; "it has never happened" is not.

Third, heat is real in Southern California. An iPad in direct sun on a Van Nuys ramp in August will shut down. Keep it out of the sun on the ground, use a vent or a kneeboard rather than a suction mount on the windshield, and do not leave it face-up on the glareshield. More on the practical test in what to expect on your FAA checkride.

Using It In Los Angeles Airspace

This is where an EFB earns its money locally. Van Nuys is a Class D airport underneath the shelves of the Los Angeles Class B, and the vertical boundaries change within a few miles. Reading those shelves off a sectional in flight is a skill, and having the chart on a moving map with your position on it makes the first twenty hours of local flying considerably less stressful.

Set up and save the routes you will actually fly: the transition over the Santa Monica Mountains, the practice area, the run down the coast toward Malibu, and the trips to nearby fields. Our guide to flying in Los Angeles airspace covers the Class B structure and the corridors, and airspace classes explained covers the rules generally.

Hardware: The One Thing People Get Wrong

A Wi-Fi-only iPad has no GPS receiver. A cellular iPad has one, and it works without a SIM card or a data plan. If you buy an iPad for flying and buy the Wi-Fi-only model to save money, your moving map will not know where you are unless you pair an external GPS or ADS-B receiver.

Beyond that: the smaller iPad models fit a kneeboard better in a light aircraft cockpit and are easier to handle in turbulence; the larger ones are easier to read. A kneeboard strap is better than a suction mount, which will fall off in heat. And a portable battery pack is cheap insurance.

The Alternatives Worth Knowing About

ForeFlight is the default in the United States, and if your instructor uses it there is real value in using the same tool. But it is not the only option, and two of the alternatives cost nothing.

  • Garmin Pilot is the main paid competitor and integrates tightly with Garmin avionics, which matters if you fly a glass-panel aircraft.
  • FltPlan Go is free and covers charts, planning and filing. It is less polished and entirely usable.
  • Avare is free and open source, and runs on Android, which ForeFlight does not.
  • Paper. A current sectional and a plotter cost very little, and learning on paper first makes you better at reading the electronic version.

ForeFlight For Students FAQ

Is There A ForeFlight Student Discount?

ForeFlight maintains an education and flight training section on its own site and the terms there change over time, so check it directly and ask your instructor what current students are using. There is no public coupon code, and sites offering one are affiliate pages rather than a genuine discount.

Do ForeFlight Coupon Codes Work?

No. The codes circulated on coupon aggregator sites and affiliate blogs are expired, invented or simply tracking links to the standard pricing page. We will not publish a code we cannot verify.

Which ForeFlight Plan Should A Student Pilot Buy?

The cheapest one. As published on 13 September 2026 that is Starter at $130 a year, which covers charts, airport information, flight planning, weather and the logbook. The higher tiers add instrument and turbine features you will not use during a private pilot course.

Do You Need ForeFlight To Learn To Fly?

No. A paper sectional, a plotter and a flight computer are sufficient and are still what you will be tested on. An electronic flight bag makes local flying easier and is what almost every pilot uses, but it is not a requirement for training.

Can You Use ForeFlight On A Checkride?

Yes, electronic flight bags are accepted on FAA practical tests. Expect to also demonstrate manual planning with a paper chart and plotter, and to answer a question about what you would do if the device failed.

Does ForeFlight Work Without An Internet Connection?

Yes, provided you have downloaded the charts and data for your region beforehand. Downloads are done on the ground over Wi-Fi. GPS position requires a cellular-model iPad or an external GPS receiver, not a data connection.

Do You Need A Cellular iPad For ForeFlight?

You need either a cellular iPad, which contains a GPS receiver that works without a SIM or data plan, or an external GPS or ADS-B receiver. A Wi-Fi-only iPad has no GPS and will not show your position in flight.

What Are The Free Alternatives To ForeFlight?

FltPlan Go is free and covers charts, planning and filing. Avare is free, open source and runs on Android. Both are usable for VFR training, though most instructors in the United States will be working from ForeFlight.
